re: Will Dylan Crews go down as the GOAT?

We have been blessed with some amazing players over the years. Crews is without a doubt in the top-5 all time at this stage, and he has another 1.25 seasons to go. He could easily end up with 60+ career homers, with a .350+ career average, and a 1.100+ OPS. This era is much tougher, given the bats and better pitching.

the level of pitching in today's game compared to Furniss' era is night and day
Oh this is some bullschitt here. Hell Pitchers had it much tougher in the 90’s. The bats were so much tougher to deal with in that era.

As a position player, I would put him about even with Bregman at this stage. He would have to hit even better to pass up Walker and Furniss. However, like Bregman, he is excellent defensively, where Walker and Furniss were not.
Walker was very good and played for the Twins for 11 years. He was the 8th pick in the MLB Draft
Aaron Hill was an excellent infielder and was a 1st Round pick (13th pick) in the MLB Draft.
I have nothing against Crews but it’s a little premature to put him above many former LSU players.

If you are looking at stats of just what he has done in his career so far then maybe. This post is basically for what you project Crews to do by the end of next season though. There is nothing that suggest Crews would have any fall off of production next season based off what he has done this season and last season. With that said, I don't think it is premature at all to put him above most former LSU players.
The amount of consistent exit velocity balls over 100 hit by Crews is ridiculous. Seems like every game LSU data shows at least 2 and sometimes 3 hits by Crews with over 100 exit velocity.

I will compare Crews when his LSU career is finished. Walker and Aaron Hill are both All-Americans several times over and if you doubted their LSU careers just look at where they were drafted and the longevity of their MLB careers.
What about Albert Belle? What about Pitchers such Springer, McDonald, Nola, Louis Coleman?
There has simply been far too much talent at LSU over the last 30-35 years to talk about a guy with 1 1/2 years left in his college career. Give him time.

Like I said, part of this thread is basically asking for what people project Crews to be by the end of his career. Not what he is now. So I agree to compare more when Crews career is over, but that is not the point of this conversation.
Nothing suggest Crews numbers will drop next season. He will likely be drafted #1 overall next season. So with those projections, I would say he is going to be top 5 in the conversation.
Also, I am taking part of this conversation but I hate GOAT comparisons. Every era and situation is so different to be comparing players now to 20-25 years ago.

Yeah, Crews has already built himself into one of the best defensive CF in college ball his first season playing the position, and has much better physical gifts and talent than most he is being compared to. Seriously, let him use a 1997 era bat and people would quit talking about past player comparisons home run totals from the hot balls big barreled bats era.

He won’t reach Walker’s insane production but if Crews stays healthy he’s going to blow away Hill’s career numbers with the exception of doubles. Hill doesn’t even belong in the same discussion as Walker unless you’re talking pure talent and draft position, in which case Crews is absolutely in their class or better as well.

they had minus 5 bats but not hot balls...lively balls are over last couple of years

Crews would hit 40 home runs in 1997

Aaron Hill definitely belongs not only in the conversation but far ahead of Crews. Crews is a work in progress and you are premature comparing him to LSU legends.
Aaron Hill is still playing in the MLB and was an All American multiple times at LSU. What are some of you smoking?

Not as good of stuff as you are apparently.

Crews has a higher career BA, OBP, SLG, more HRs, and only about 60 less RBI.

Dylan Crews .356/.450/.670
Lol
Good luck finding many peers that can compete with those numbers over a career. I guarantee Aaron Hill ain’t that guy

Crews will be a top 5 pick maybe even number one next year. He would be a top 5 pick in this year’s draft if he was eligible.

A bit of trivia on a Monday:
Did you know that 2 second basemen (Aaron Hill and DJ Lemahieu) that played for LSU were both born in the same town? Visalia, CA.
It's a slow day....

LSU has 17 SEC Titles
LSU has 12 SEC Tournament Titles
LSU has 18 CWS Appearances
LSU has 6 CWS Titles
Yet you and other nitwits like yourself are anointing a player with 1 1/2 years to go as the Greatest Of All Time LSU Baseball Player. I guess we have to be thankful that Crews will finally put LSU on the map. LSU must have been lucky up until now. It’s premature and undeserved to call Crews Greatest Of All Time.

quote:Not many people have said he is the greatest, but his combination of talent and production will have him way up the list. As for the 1 1/2 year thing, on the list you posted earlier you have two guys who literally only played here two seasons. So no, it isn’t too early to start discussing it with Crews with the caveats being he has to remain healthy and keep up a similar pace.

No it is not. There are many great players who built the LSU program long before 2022. It is far premature to crown a guy who has this year and next to finish his career. Then you can compare him to the former greats who built the LSU Program.
This is common sense.
