Why are snails seen as cute, sweet animals, but slugs are seen as gross, nasty animals?

People seem to think that snails are cute, but they want to puke when they see a slug crawling on the ground. It’s weird because a slug is essentially the same as a snail without a shell.
Side note: I used to enjoy pouring salt on slugs in order to kill them when I was a kid. However, I felt it would be too mean to do this to a snail.

I don’t know that too many people find snails cute but I think the shell does have a lot to do with it. Plus the coloring of slugs is typically nastier

I’m not partial to either but imagine a slug is a moving snot rocket. It’s all about packaging. Imagine a turtle without a shell. That’d be nasty too.

Slugs are attracted to beer, so they can't be all bad. I remember my grandma had a six pack of beer in her storage closet (she was totally against drinking) that we would pour into a flat lid, wait, and then salt those little bastards away.
