NASA is planning its first-ever mission to bring dirt and rocks from Mars back to Earth — but before that momentous event happens, the space agency needs to figure out exactly how to protect our home planet from any alien microbes that might hitch a ride.

"Maybe this is the most important environmental assessment that humans have ever done," says Peter Doran, a geologist at Louisiana State University who studies life in extreme environments.

Well if we screw the pooch on this mission this may be the end result.

"life in extreme environments"?

Fortunately I'll never know.

I know people shite on NASA but don't people think they would have thought this shite out by now? Sounds like fear mongering by NPR.

What if they’re racist rocks like the one previously found on the Wisconsin campus?

Seriously, it would be an awesome discovery if we found life on Mars. It would probably rustle a lot of jimmies but not mine.

Is it life, or just a clump of cells?

there could be life.

JULIE: That's right. Good boy.

FRED: Or death.

Death to anyone who dare to disturb
the vicious Martian crust devils, with their venomous feet and their wet, sucking lips!

Shut it down! 2 weeks to flatten the alien curve. 3.50 mask minimum.

But seriously, that would be interesting.

Mars is a horrible place for earth life. So for any life on Mars, Earth is probably a horrible place to live. I'm not even slightly concerned about this.

Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids. In fact, it's cold as hell. And there's no one there to raise them if you did.

We have far more to fear from viruses and bacteria yet to be discovered on earth than we do from anything Mars might have to offer. Radiation from the sun and from space has long ago fried anything that may have arisen there.
