I’ve never seen anything like it. Usually you’re trying to sift a debris ball out from the middle of other radar returns. This was its complete own thing. Literally the only thing on radar in that specific area.

It is one of the cooler things I've caught live on radar. That storm developed that little tail, which formed a rotation, separated, hung around home for a bit, then bolted around the time the new meso started to form.

The whole life of that storm (I can't fit the full gif here) was an amazing one to watch. It really did have it all.

I'd purchase photo #4 and 7 and turn them into wall art. Photo #7 perfectly shows what a supercell thunderstorm with a wall cloud and tornado looks like.

Was driving back from Houston the other day and noticed an area of trees that had been stripped of bark and leaves with debris caught up in them. When we looked up whether there had been a tornado indeed there was an F2 this past March. I've now seen three separate tornado paths along that stretch of hwy 21. I've seen five tornado paths in East Texas total and while living in Oklahoma another four. In Oklahoma three of those were F5s being the Moore and El Reno 2013 and El Reno 2011. The damage path of El Reno 2011 was about 8/10ths of a mile wide and had stripped some homes completely off the slabs. There was nothing left but the concrete. I was in a shelter twice. I've only ever seen one tornado in the distance when I was a kid and that was in South Louisiana.

Wasn’t Andover wiped off the map by an F5 back in the 90s?

Yep, in 1991. That tornado hit McConnell Air Force Base near Andover. This is a well known video of it hitting AFB:

Watching the videos of this tornado and seeing the damage pics, that was a hell of alot of upward motion. That's a great illustration of why cars and mobile homes will never be a good idea in a tornado. Anything that the wind can get under will be lofted. We don't understand the power of the updrafts within those meso-vorts very well yet, but they are plenty powerful. In Reed's video you can see a storage container flying. It looks like possibly a full-sized shipping container, maybe.

Unreal, especially when you consider that this likely wasn't a "violent" tornado.

The helical meso-vorts can be seen doing damage here. This video is cropped, zoomed, and slowed down. Original video from @TweetsFromTommy Here

It is never good to see damage, but learning something from it is important.

Sadly, three University of Oklahoma meteorology students were killed in an accident on their way back from storm chasing last night.

Heartreaking loss of 3 OU students in an accident on the way back from chasing. These students are close to my heart and a shining light in the weather community. Words cannot describe the sadness. My thoughts and prayers go out to their families and friends. RIP my friends

KSN article on the damage

quote:

Andover was not the only city in Butler County to take a hit. So did Rosalia, about 32 miles northeast of Andover. Erik Sorum, a resident of Rosalia, told KSN that many of his neighbors’ homes and barns have suffered severe damage.

That is some serious imagination calling Rosalia a city. It isn't even incorporated. If your neighbors have barns you do not live in a city.

I mean it’s a community. I get what you’re saying though.

It was funny on KSN last night one of their guys was out driving and Teachman (chief meteorologist) tells him to pull over because they can see the tornado. Like 45 seconds later her assistant in the office gets a call you can here in the background confirming the tornado northeast of Rosalia. Guy in the car turns to his driver and is like “northeast Rosalia let’s go.” Teachman looked like she was about to shite herself

Yep.

And Round 3 Wednesday.

That Monday set up is more centralized on Oklahoma and your part of Kansas. Get a bit of a negative tilt on the shortwave coming out of the Rockies and then the low level jet starts to ramp up by the afternoon.

You know, generally not what you want on May 2nd.

If you want to see something wild, go to Reed's full drone video on YouTube and play it at 0.25x speed. Watch its motion. Unreal.

Reed Timmer YouTube

It is so reminiscent of the "tornado machines" that the smoke/vapor simulations are done on.

Holy hell, I just found out my cousin lives in Andover with his wife. Even better, their apartment complex makes an appearance in Reed's video. They are fine, and the apartment is fine but for one window that got busted by something.

I put the drone video on the tv and played it at 0.25x speed. The bigger screen really helps see what is going on.
