I am a CPA dumbass.

Guess what else CPA’s don’t know, how to use public tax software or what all it does

What? What kind of crack pot outfit are you using that doesn't know how to use software?

Basic filings like the OP is talking about is more than likely not worth a CPA

Maybe, and that could certainly be true, but that doesnt make your statement that HR Block is the same thing as a CPA firm any less idiotic.

Most of my accounting emails are with people without degrees. They are the ones asking for information and checking boxes.

What kind of tax firm has non degreed people doing real work? Or are you asking to be billed several hundred an hour for clerical work? Are you under the impression that tax firms are the only professional service using administrative assistants at some point in the process?

quote:

This whole idea of “pay a professional it”ll save you tons” is an idealistic pipe dream. It’s not reality. CPA’s are worth it when you are talking about $50,000+ of taxes.

What if there are zero taxes because your CPA has helped you harvest NOL's from several years ago?

You have no idea what you are talking about, being shite on by every other poster in this thread, yet still on the attack. It's the if every guy you meet is an a-hole story.

I'm sure you could have had more face time or attention with more senior staff or partners, but are you willing to pay $600/hour for it?

I’ve seen very few specialized attorneys bill at that rate. The only CPAs billing at $600/hr are Big 4 partners. There is absolutely no reason an individual that has been filing his own taxes should be consulting with someone charging that sort of hourly rate.

They are different models for a reason.

And that reason is not applicable to the OP and neither is your input.

Factually incorrect.

Actually, if you read OP’s follow post you’ll see he is actually looking for someone to give him tax advice and help with tax planning. That tells me he needs a CPA and not some generic tax preparer that you’d get at your H&R Block types.

But, this thread turned into an OT dick measuring contest with half the posters not actually paying attention to what OP needs

It may have gotten a little OT but Mingo was trying to help OP until baldona came in irresponsibly giving bad advice. IMO Mingo was in the right setting the record straight.

A mid size regional firm will be small enough to be attentive but large enough to have a wealth of professionals and knowledge.

Age isn't the issue the complexity of the return. Is it multi state, s corp.
The amount of money isn't the issue it's how the money is made .

Man, this thread went sideways quickly.

Most CPAs I know do little to no advertising. Rather, they gain clients through referrals.

I would use the same idea if I were you. Look at your successful friends, family, and neighbors. Look at the ones who you feel may be in a similar place financially, etc, as you are. So in your case, someone with a rental, etc.

Ask those people who they use as their CPA.

As far as the big vs small firm thing... I'll just say this. A small firm's A client may be a large firm's C or D client. It's nothing personal against the client... it's just a matter of fee income, complexity, and "fit" within the firm.

Over the years, some of my clients have grown too complex for me / get involved in areas I'm not as good at. For example, it is extremely rare for me to do international work. If a business client starts operating overseas, I usually tell them how proud I am of them and offer to help move them to a CPA firm that is better suited for international work.

I would recommend getting a CPA for tax planning/ advice if you aren’t familiar with a Schedule E on your tax return. For rentals you have depreciation to think about and you’re also dealing with passive income or losses which may be limited if you have a loss. P&N may not be the best firm as far as pricing goes if you only have rental properties. Larger firms like that have minimums
