They are a great idea if you want your friends and family to hate you.

I got married in Napa, but no one was invited. It was just me, my wife and our hot air balloon operator/minister. It was awesome with none of the headaches of a normal wedding.

I was best man for one in the Philippines and didnt go to ones in Destin.

So long as you don't have expectations for other peoples ability and desire to travel and are happy with as many people (large or small) that can make it and are reasonable it can work.

Obviously the easer you make it for people and the more notice you give, the better chance you will have people attend.

IMO. If you aren't paying everyone's travel they are a terrible idea and the sign of a narcissist. Dumb arse niece did this in the Caymans and we had to drag our whole clan down there to keep peace in the family. Cost me a fortune. I am not a fan. Get married locally and invite anyone who wants to go on the honeymoon if that's your thing.

Isla Mujeres. About 40 people. Best decision ever. Was incredibly easy and we were able to celebrate it with our best friends and closest family. Almost all of the people that attended have been back on their own vacations because of how much they enjoyed it.

I say screw everyone else. It’s YOUR wedding. Do whatever makes you happy. I think that’s one event you can be selfish about. Spend a quarter of the $$ for something way better.

Getting married in August in Durango, CO at the top of the ski resort. 11,000 feet up. Have to take a chair lift to get to the ceremony site.

My parents live there and is where I grew up.

The other 100 people who are invited are from all over the country and specifically the Southeast and South Florida.

Our thoughts are, we want a small wedding but also want to invite everyone. So the fewer people who can come the better.

Took a 5 day cruise from Miami to Key West, Cozumel and back. Got off the boat in KW, took a chartered trolley to Smathers Beach and got married, and then back to downtown until the ship left. We invited anyone of our friends who went on the cruise to come to the wedding or not, their choice. Ended up with about 75 people at the beach. Pretty damn cool and cheap (paid $450 for the wedding package).

Are both families from the same city? If one family has to travel and not the other, it’s easier to pull off a destination wedding.

If you making everyone travel, keep the invites small.

St. John in the USVI.

Had right under 35 people and it was awesome. Wouldn't change it for anything, amazing trip and wedding. Took a big cat out for the reception and sailed around the islands.
