Could the problem with our infielders be a lack of practice just fielding balls?

I'm talking about repetitive fielding of balls from different angles, setting the feet and making the throw to first. Again, and again, and again. Could it be this simple?
My kid played high school ball at a high level and was at his best when he fielded 100's of balls (maybe 1000's) every week. setting his feet, making the throw to first. It helped overcome any fear of failure, and created muscle memory that created confidence.
Our infielders seem to be making VERY fundamental mistakes in every aspect of fielding the ball and making the throwover.
Maybe the discipline and work ethic of Alex Bregman is a lost art in the era of Covid 19.

I think a lot of it is mental. Their confidence is at an all time low and seeing their teammates mess up lowers their confidence even more. None of these infielders would have gotten to this high of a level while being such poor fielders. It has to be in their head.

if they arent practicing ground balls for a big time SEC program, then we have a serious issue

Nobody really knows why this is happening. Otherwise it would be fixed. Could be lack of practice. Could be too much pressure. Could be he’s got the yips. Could be he’s just not that good in his mental game and never will be. No idea. But it definitely looks like he has fear out there at this point. We’ve seen a pretty big sample.

You don’t make it to an SEC school not knowing how to field a ball
For whatever reason they can’t get out of their own heads & when one mistake happens it seems to make things worse to where everyone tries too hard & more mistakes happen
Johnson needs to work on the mental aspect of the game

If they can't field ground balls they shouldn't be here. That's something you should EXCEL drastically at at the high school level in order to be considered a major D1 infielder. I liked it a lot better when Maineri recruited 6 shortstops in every class and put them all over the field. At the end he kind of abandoned that method.

I went on a few dates with a girl whose roommate used to hook up with Bregman and he would just park his car at the practice facility to make it look like he was putting in tee work late and go to Tigerland. His “work ethic” is the baseball version of “Les Miles is a great man” that every ranter repeats because other rantards say it. There are a lot of LSU baseball players who deserve credit for being incredibly hard workers and he isn’t one of them I’m sure Jay isn’t having them field ground balls btw, thanks for the insight, high school baseball superdad

You can know how to field a ball and be a great infielder, but if you don't get CONSTANT, REPETITIVE practice you will get rusty quickly and lose confidence. Kids this age can become head cases overnight.
Sometimes these kids forget that fundamentals are everything in baseball. Sometimes coaches forget as well.
Again, could it be this simple?

Wow. The rant never disappoints. And for the record, a close friend coached one of Bregman’s teammates at LSU in high school. There is nothing exaggerated about how hard he worked and still works.

I have heard the opposite from people close to the program. That they are doing more fielding practice than ever before.

Somebody who has time and knows what they’re looking at should breakdown his errors as of late so maybe we can have a better understanding. But 4 weeks ago Theriot said it’s mental and that he’s moving too fast. I know he blew a couple of plays at the absolute worst time last night. Basically like a QB who continues to execute poorly on 3rd-4th down. It can be a long term thing unfortunately. I feel like we’ve seen a big enough sample to say this is a significant problem. I hope he can figure it out.
