Does anyone find the whole idea of Patreon off putting and weird

There are plenty of shows or podcasts or whatever I wouldn’t mind throwing a few dollars at. A tip as you will for enjoying their stuff. But then I go onto their patreon and I see what they’re charging for and it just looks gross. Especially charging people for spending time with them.
Like “for $30 a month, you and other strangers on the internet can spend 30 minutes talking to me.” I can not imagine how awkward those conversations have to be.
The whole thing just sounds incredibly awkward.

I understand they need to prioritize their time. And that incentivizing on their time is necessary. Doesn’t make it any less awkward

at one point cum town was making like 200k/month with no social media or other promotion. insanity

For $30 a month I’ll send you poopy underwear.

I fully understand these people need to be paid, and that direct payment helps stop commercials in podcasts and what not, I just can’t pull the trigger to pay for it.

When a lot of artists put their stuff out there for free, why not give people the opportunity to contribute if they like their work

Throwing $3.50 your way in the superchat

And that’s what I want to do. It’s the whole tiering that feels gross.

I thought Patreon was like the first Onlyfans, no?

It's a pure money grab for most people. Like all things, those that abuse it probably hurt the ones with talent and actual content that you may considering worth paying for because it turns normal people off on the whole idea.

I had never heard of Patreon before this post.

it's a podcast mostly about racist (and sometime gay) impressions. it used to be hilarious but it sucks now.

I subscribe to multiple podcast Patreons, all are $5 and come with an additional hour or so episode each week. That’s essentially $5 for four hours of entertainment each month, which is worth it.

i agree. i pay $5/month for four extra tim dillon show episodes and it's well worth it

It basically works like this.
You decide to be someone’s patron. And they encourage you to give more by doing exclusive shite for them. If it’s an artist, they usually include 1:1 instruction or if it’s a show, they let you decide the topic of a show. Usually it’s access to behind the scenes stuff. But I have only seen 1 that didn’t have anything that seemed sketchy in it.
A lot of them are “get access to my supporter level and talk with my other supporters. Get access to my follower level and you can get access to my follower level. Get access to the gold level and you can message me. Get access to my platinum tier and I’ll respond.”
That’s only slight hyperbole to the one I was just looking at for art that I went into with full intent of sending money to and I lost interest.

I subscribe to:
Tim Dillon
True Anon
Yeah, But Still
Chapo
Stavvy and Adam on Cumtown are both hilarious, I just don’t like the dynamic of that show and prefer them as guests on other shows.
TrueAnon is low key killing it on Patreon and in general, Brace Belden is he most entertaining dude in podcasting.
