Golf needs another dominant figure

After the way Tiger and Phil dominated the 2000s and early 2010s it's hard for me to get excited about these tournaments unless a big name like them is in it at the end.
Tiger's win in 2019 at The Masters was an all time sporting event. Phil's 2021 PGA win wasn't far behind it. It really takes things to a completely different level.
Rory seemed like he was going to be the guy but he hasn't won a major since 2014. Then it appeared that Jordan Spieth was the new big name. Now it's been 5 years since he's won a major. We're now seeing a similar trend with Brooks Koepka.

Is golf into BDSM or something?

Hunter Mahan and Rickie Fowler were very popular circa 2011 and were highly touted to be the next big stars.
Keegan Bradley - top 10 in world golf ranking in 2011, currently outside of the top 80 in the world
Graeme McDowell - currently ranked 336 in the world. He won the 2010 Open
Hunter Mahan - ranked 4th in the world in 2012 at one point, now he’s out of the top 1,000 in the world
Jason Dufner - very consistent and somewhat popular around 2010 or so, won 2013 PGA Championship and is currently outside of 400th in the world rankings
Luke Donald - world number one in 2012 and currently ranked outside the top 500

A dominant figure in golf needs to have the charisma too. That’s tough in golf, as it’s such a solitary sport.

Brandt Snedeker, Martin Kaymer, and Webb Simpson are a few more from the Dufner, Donald, Mahan, Bradley, etc. generation that looked ready to have breakout careers 10+ years ago.
Dufner and Donald were a little older than the rest, but the others were all in their 20’s. Several of them won majors. The rest climbed into the top 5 in the world rankings, but they all seem to have fallen off shortly afterwards around 2013 or so.

I would rather watch three or four really good golfers battle it out all weekend then watch one great golfer win by 10 strokes.

I kind of like the idea of having a mixed bag of players who can contend in the tournaments. Watching the same player win with regularity gets old for me.
I'm a big fan of darts and have followed the game for decades, and until his retirement in 2018, if Phil Taylor was in a tournament, he was the odds on favorite to win it, and often did.
He finished his career as a 16 time World Champion. Three others are in second place in World Titles, each with 5 apiece------huge gap.

13 of the current top 20 in the world are under 30. I think another 4 or 5 are 30-31. This is great for the game because any of them are capable of going on a run and dominating for a stretch.

I always like supporting Japanese players because of their respect for the game. The amateur out of Japan, Keita Nakajima, will be one to watch for the next few years. Cameron Smith has a unique style/look for the game of golf and it’s nice to see that as well.

Too much money now for sustained drive to succeed. Golfers make money, get serious with girlfriends, get married or have kids and fall off. Happened to Rory, Jordan and even Brooks (he has also been injured, though). Rickie Fowler is worst case. He cannot even qualify for big tourneys now since getting married.

I probably wouldnt give too much of a shite about golf, either, if I had $50M in the bank and this locked with me in a Florida beach house every day....

Lol. You’re using a once-in-a-lifetime generational talent as a baseline. What do you expect?

Golf isn't an exciting sport, it's not going to do well without a Tiger figure. That's the way it goes.
Now is Scheffler. I see Scheffler as the flavor of the month. He does have Nicklaus coached pedigree so I'm willing to pay attention. But he already looks 40

Tiger was the rare exception of a guy who had all of his dreams come true, made a billion dollars, got married to a smoking hot model, had kids.... And still was never satisfied and kept burning to crush eveyone.
He has the MJ, Brady mentality, who love nothing more in life than competing...even at the detriment of his personal life. 99.99999% of everyone else, including pro athletes, won't sacrifice their entire life outside of a sport, to be that good at their sport.
Plus... He had lots of Cocktail waitress arse on the side to fulfill his lusts.
Seems the best we will see for the forseeable future is a guy who semi-dominates for 2-4 years, wins 4 or 5 majors, and then falls off the map.
I haven't even seen Jordan Speith's name for like 3 years now.
