Why are we supposed to tell service members, “thank you for your service”?

I don’t understand it. My dad served in the Air Force. He got paid a salary, a place to live, free healthcare for life, preference when applying for jobs, and they can buy USSAA insurance or something.
I hear that a lot and I was just curious was prevailing thought was on this subject.
Remember I’m not saying people shouldn't say that. I’m asking why.

Because most of them decided to go into war zones while you worked in an air conditioned office where the biggest threat was Becky coming in any given day with a wedding invitation for her daughter.

It’s pretty cringy.
My brother was in the AF and HATED when people said it to him.

I drove in Louisiana with drive thru daiquiri joints everywhere. So hazardous conditions isn’t a good argument.

It is a show of respect and appreciation, two things we don't have enough of these days.
ETA: The same reason I still say "Yes sir" and "No ma'am" to my elders.

Would you serve in the Military?
Posted on 3/23/22 at 1:19 pm to joe_cotton
Bc manners; you thank someone that does something nice for you.....BTW you don't HAVE to do but it's manners

You don't have to and we don't expect it... not sure why you're making a big deal out of this.

Because whether or not you agree with what war they are going to fight, they're still risking their lives for the country we live in.
I don't personally go out of my way to say it, but have no issue with those that do.

This isn’t a big deal. I’ll tell one thank you for your service if they thank me for paying taxes.

It’s not a requirement stupid arse. It’s a courtesy. Find something a little more substantive to ponder and bitch about.

Nobody has ever said you should.

Only if you have your Dependapottomus with you

I also say it to teachers and nurses.

I would like the military folks to know that when I give you a dude nod as I walk past that is "thank you for your service" in a manner that is less awkward for both of us

I don’t say it to teachers. They work 8 months a year.
