Formula 1: Drive to Survive Season 4 Thread - Out Now!

Anybody else a fan?
I binged the first 3 seasons not long ago and now I'm hooked on Formula 1. Apparently that has happened for a lot of people and the show has had a huge impact on the sport.
For some reason, I find myself rooting against the Red Bull team. I think it's because I'm just not a fan of Christian Horner. Dude is smart, but he just seems like a snake in the grass.
3 seasons in and I still dont know who my favorite team or driver is. After this season i'll get caught up on the championship race/2022 season. I've waited so i can watch this season 1st. I havent even looked to see who won for 2021 but I have a feeling that Red Bull/Max is going to top Mercedes/Hamilton.

Really looking forward to this season of the show, and the new F1 season.
I like most of the drivers on the grid, but my top favorites would be Sainz, Ric, Norris and Sha Lala.

I lie Sainz too. He can drive his arse off. It would be pretty nice to see what it would look like if everybody lined up in a Mercedes. You have to think that Hamilton isnt THAT much better of a driver, the car has a lot to do with it.
I didnt care for Ric at first, but he does seem to be a pretty genuinely nice guy as the series goes on. I knew it was a mistake him leaving Red Bull for Renault. That was never going to work out like he thought.
Am I correct that they kind of put a salary cap type limit on the money you can put into the cars now? To try and level the playing field. I think that'd be good for the sport. Following a 20+ race season seeing almost the same results each race would get a bit old.

The car has a lot to do with it, especially the sustained dominance, but don't discredit Hamilton. He is an all-time great driver.

O I dont doubt that. He's a pretty likeable guy too. Granted the only time I've ever seen him talk is from the show. He doesnt seem to be cocky, he just goes out and wins races.
I collect sports cards, it's insane how much some of his higher end cards go for. He is clearly the most popular driver. No one outside of Max sells even close to as high as his.

Make sure you check out the MSB F1 thread. It’s a great read all year long.
Ohh and make sure you tell them the reason you’re really into F1 now is because of DtS. They love getting new perspectives from folks new to the sport, especially those who caught on after DtS started.

Love this show. Same producers are doing a version for the PGA as well. Anyone know what time it drops?

I watch DTS and will this year but more for the comedy of the inauthentic narratives.
I do appreciate the number of fans it brought into the sport, truly I do.
However, the hordes that descended on some of the previously excellent F1 forums made them almost insufferable. I watched posters who had decades of experience leave in droves. People with real hardcore knowledge many of whom worked inside F1 at some point. One of my friends is a F1 stats guy and at one time did the stats for every English-speaking broadcast in the world except for Sky. I met him in the Speed Channel days. He quite posting on any forums. I finally gave up in December and now my only posting is on the MSB F1 threads.
DTS is fun and certainly useful for Liberty, especially in the US market which has been hard to capture and hold. If you follow the sport closely it portrays an alternate reality. F1 is full of great stories both technical and personal and has always been populated by villains and not so villains almost all are true characters. It is the last place you need to manufacture drama.
It is like the whole Toto and Christian ordeal, they are both jackasses and the truth is I think you should love and hate them both. Also while it is perfectly normal DTS makes the drivers bigger than the teams and tech, the driver is maybe 10% of the equation. I digress and accept the fact I am a curmudgeon but I got more enjoyment out of staying up all night last night and the next two nights watching Bahrain testing than DTS will give me.
Nothing wrong with that. As an old soul I would suggest picking a team, drivers come and go but the (real) teams stick around.

Hopefully not too much fake drama in this season. The 2021 season had enough real drama on its own.

Your cynicism is noted but try to remember that for every fan created who is there for the drama, another is there who truly loves the technical side of things. I’m fascinated by the process. I’m late to the party but everything is enjoyable to me from the engineering to the testing to the strategy to qualifying… with race day being a couple hours of drama. I see the whole race as the climax. I don’t participate much in the F1 thread mostly because if feel like a newb but I love reading the insights. All this to say don’t become jaded because a sport you love is growing which can bring with it the mouth breathers.

I heard about the PGA series on one of the PGA XM Radio shows. They were talking so much about the F1 series and how well it was done that I decided to check it out.
Now I’m hooked lmao.
I really don’t have any favorite teams or drivers but I think I’ve developed a man crush on Toto lmao.
Another great F1 related series is Grand Prix Driver on Amazon Prime. It follows the Mclaren Team in 2017 as they develop their new car for that season.

Not sure if this is a trap or not
Show is out now for viewing btw. Going to watch a few episodes tonight. Pretty pumped.

Just playing a newb devils advocate...
Thats the feel I get from the show. At times I like both of them and at times I dont like both. How do you see the show portraying them?
That's an easy one for me to not feel sorry for. The movie/tv board is a prime example. This was the best board on the whole site for a long time, now half the threads are woketards. You can have a perfectly fine show, and even if there is the tiny little bit of wokeness, the same guys are going to come in and bitch in every thread. Even if the show isnt woke in any way, they will come in and find a way to bitch. It's at times insufferable, but being on forums like this aint for the thin skinned. You take the good with the bad and learn how to argue
But I get it, it does suck, hate it for your buddy. But this show made the sport that much popular, if he works in the industry, his paygrade might have went up.
I guess I just get a different feel to the show than you. I dont really view it as a drama. Sure there is some, mainly from the "im racing for a spot on the team" or "I dont want to be the #2 driver so i'm looking for a new team" stuff. I guess there is team owner/lead drama. I think I honestly like the racing side of it, the cars and the fighting for position side of it the best. That's why I havent looked up to see who won the championship so I dont get spoilers even though its not even the current season. Once i'm done with this season of DTS, i'm going to get caught up on whats actually going on in the sport as far as the championship goes and start legitimately following it. Right now, all my knowledge is based off this show, so you can take it with a grain of salt.

The championship battle last season was epic, all season long. Honestly, I don't know if the show even needs to manufacture any drama.

I've loved F1 since the 2000 Season, and even got to catch the 200 & 2001 USGPs at Indy, but I fell out of the habit of watching the races on the regular after Schumacher left Ferrari.
I need to give this show a chance. Watching Hamilton rack up win after win in the past 5 years, I now know how folks felt during the Red Reign of the early 2000s.

Good. Can't wait to see how they cover the controversial finale.
They kinda did screw Lewis Hamilton. Never been a fan of his but he's a legitimate goat. Right up there with Senna and Shumacher.
While we're on the subject, if you can find/watch "Senna," do so. It's excellent.
Schumacher documentary is good too.

It's interesting what brings folks into the sport. A lot of people saying this series brought them in and that's great.
For me it was the Michelin tire disaster at the USGP where only 6 cars ran. It was big news. I got interested, and went to the USGP in Indy the following (and final) two years.
They aren't quite as fun/obscene as they were back then. A v8 turning at 22k rpm? Inject it in my veins. It was otherworldly being there.

I credit the late 90's Playstation game Need for Speed: High Stakes. They featured a Ferrari F40 & F50, describing them as "Street legal Formula One" cars. Unlocking Senna's car in one of the Gran Turismo games didn't hurt.
When my host at Indy dropped me off at IMS in 2000 for the initial qualifying sessions, you could hear the whine of the engines as they went down the start/finish straight. I wasn't even inside the track yet, and I had goosebumps at the sound.

I knew I shouldnt have checked this thread again
Im 6 episodes in on this season. I keep falling asleep at night so I havent been able to watch as many.
My main takeaway from this season so far is that I really dislike the Russian driver for Haas. He's a little prick that cant drive. Quit blaming it on the car, you just cant drive and you're only driving because your dad's money. He is the first driver that I've actually disliked. Not crazy about Gasly but I didn't truly dislike him like I do that kid.
I still havent picked a team but I think my favorite driver is Sainz. Dude can race his arse off. With my limited knowledge, I keep thinking that if you give this dude a Mercedes, he'd whip everybody.
