Fontenot Infatuation?

Why is everyone so pumped up about Fontenot. Yes he did return and does throw hard, but he constantly gets hit! He has failed against good competition more than he has succeeded here. Rather run Trent V out there. He competes!

Because when he is on, like the Florida state game, he is an elite level closer. And he has 3 really good pitches. Sometimes the ball just finds open space.

Fontenot has always been a little bit of hot and cold.
But when he’s hot he has had some great outings for LSU. Just last season at Ole Miss and then again in the Regionals he was huge for us.

Exactly
The problem is.. the balls get hit more than not when he’s throwing

He has a dirty break on his pitches. He’s just lacks control sometimes and hangs breaking balls up

You guys probably wanted the Yankees to cut Mariana Rivera everytime he allowed a hit too.

Kinda been average for couple years now

Last night he made some really poor pitches when ahead in the count. Fastball up in the zones that wouldn’t get high enough as it should have and some breaking balls ahead in the count that looked more like a get me over instead of a K pitch.
We have seen him completely opposite of that though. He will be fine.

nothing to say about fontenot, but i think vietmeier was doing well before giving up a long one

After he tells you that he wants to start and not close I am not sure you put him out there in a close situation? He has never been consistent. Let him start or be a middle relief. He leaves the across the plate too much for a closer.

Seems like falling off into the 1st base dugout after every pitch would make consistency a bit challenging

It does, I have noticed he is not as bad as he was last year. I also noticed his arm or motion stays in the groove to the plate longer before his body starts moving to first base.
I also think as he pitches longer in innings his fast ball flattens out.

Fontenot is good. No infatuation but he is one of the best we have in the pen.

I agree. I never understand the confidence shown for the guy.
He is the most, "on the edge" relief pitcher I have seen.
He is always one pitch away from disaster.
