When do people start thinking about buying cemetery plots and pre-planned funerals?

My parents are 80 and still alive but have had their cemetery plots for 20 years.
I'm 56 and don't care to plan for my own death right now. But if you look at the cost of crypts and tombs and mausoleums in New Orleans, it's ridiculous and is only going up over time. Should I view this as an appreciating asset and just sell it later if I don't want it?
Cremation is always an option, but my wife will haunt me if I cremate her.

when they find out that pre planned funerals are 1/2 the cost as after the fact funerals.

My parents always promised to bury me under the shed, so I'm good to go - that shed is still there.

Why do people buy cemetery space still?
The idea of cemeteries seems very narcissistic to me

Following... If I were to pass I would just like my own website for a bit that is a eulogy and just to be creamated... Basically it should say that I battled Russian propogandists daily and fought hard for all Americans to get to experience the magic of cheese dip... Not that yellow crap out west. I'm talking about the real deal queso Blanco from your local El Toro loco, or mi hacienda, or Cinco hermanos tacos... Whatever Mexican restaurant it may be. All Americans deserve a taste of Mexican American queso Blanco.

Never for me. I have done all the paperwork to donate my body to a medical school though.

I think it's morbid, but also financially smart. Thinking about dying scares the crap out of me so I avoid it.

I did at 46. My wife died at 47 from cancer and I went ahead and paid for my plot etc... while taking care of her arrangements. It just seemed easier.

my in-laws have everything picked out.... and bring it up during family holidays and dinners all the time...and it depresses my wife...everytime

Some people do the pre-planned funeral stuff because they don’t want their families to have the burden of planning a funeral while they are grieving and also get the plot they “want.”
I want them to cremate me and spread my ashes wherever my family wants to do it and definitely don’t have a place they feel they need to visit

I think the key is to make sure people know what you want.
My family is 100% clear I want to be cremated and I don't care much beyond the fact I think graves/cemeteries are a huge racket and waste of space. They've known since my 20s.

Being trying to convince my wife to do this for years. Keep telling her it would be easier on both of us and the children when the time comes.
She doesn’t want to think about it.

I’d guess it’s after their parents die and they realize the cost and decisions that come with passing away.
I joke with my wife that I’ll “get” everything my parents have when they die. Two funeral bills.

All seriousness though I have in my "advance directive" that I want to be cremated after organ donation, but I don't know what they can pull from a chemo patient. No care in the world what they do with me after that.
