Having your troops in sovereign territory of another country is a position of strength...
It appears the Ukrainians are willing to talk.

Not doing as well as expected and losing are two different things. Russia is definitely in the strongest position in Ukraine right now. If they negotiate and Putin gets eastern Ukraine he got what he wanted.

Nuking Kiev or any other city in Ukraine would screw up Crimea and a huge swath of Russia as well.
Not really. For starters, Ukraine is not tiny. It's about the size of Texas. Also, modern nukes are not the same shite that we hit Japan with and the soviets were testing 50 years ago. The fallout is dramatically reduced and more controlled than in the past.

I think what he wants is for Ukraine to either be part of Russia, or be a vassal state of Russia. Either way he doesn't want them part of Nato. He said that.

Germany thought this as well in WWI. I’m fact when the armistice was signed in November 1918, the German army was still entrenched in France.
I’m not comparing Russia 2022 to Germany 1918. I’m just pointing out having your forces in your enemy’s territory isn’t exactly a position of strength, especially when you’ve failed to secure any actual objectives, namely their main population and communication centers.

They’ve been willing to talk since before the Russians invaded. They have no goals other than for Russia to stop their invasion. Russia on the other hand has stated their objectives. Among these are the complete demilitarization of Ukraine and strict neutrality. Neither of these goals have been achieved by Russia. This fact, coupled with the Russian failure to capture either Kiev or Kharkov (less than 25 miles inside Ukraine) is a good indicator the war is not going as well for Russia as they expected.
(Downvote it all you want, but you can’t make an intelligent retort to anything I’ve said)

NATO is definitely never admit Ukraine now. Europe doesn’t want to fight for the Slavic countries.

Odessa and Khrakov would seem to be somewhat minimum things you'd definitely need to take to hold Ukraine with any degree of stability; Mariupol, Zaporizhie, Lviv, Kherson, and Chernvisti would be important, just in terms of controlling things entering the country and their domestic distribution as well.

You assume the objective is to take cities. I think the objective is to get a permanent concession to get Ukraine to not be a threat to Russia (from the Russian perspective). To get the latter might not require the former.
If the cities were the objective, the Russians look pretty bad to be sure.

Not at all. You don't do a lot of controlling of the Ukraine without those cities, especially in terms of being able to keep the Ukrainians from fighting back.
If you want to get permanent concession, removing the ability of Ukrainians to be supplied from outside is about as important as it gets.

This war had to be won quickly.
They need to take out organized resistance before the advanced weaponry from the west reaches them.
They already had some. They are about to get a shite ton more. They wanted a quick win before the west could help arm them. They needed a quick win before the sanctions hurt.
I think Putin thought he would stroll in use paratroopers to grab stuff in front and quickly quell organized resistance. They could place a puppet government in and be out before the west had a chance to arm them and before sanctions hurt them.
Well they had enough advanced weapons to punch them in the nose and more is streaming in by the minute.
They have lost millions or billions of dollars in equipment since the beginning.
The sanctions are going to cost them millions a day.
This is a country with the gdp ofFlorida.
They can't afford this thing.
I can't imagine in any way this is going how Putin wanted.
In addition to the immense costs involved, the entire world has seen that Russia really isn't all that.
That is not something he wanted the world to see. This was supposed to be them steamrolling like dessert storm.
But it's like fighting a well armed insurgency where they haven't taken everything.
In fact the Ukrainians probably have better tech than the Russians.

Russians aren't standing in line to empty their accounts from banks because they have confidence in the government
