I mean....they are kind of letting their potential future member out to dry.

Not saying WE should jump in, but man this is like having the key to a locked door and watching someone trying to open it.

Nothing is stopping them if they wish, but there's no obligation.

Absolutely NOT. NATO has no business being involved in this.

Do you want WW3? Do you understand the ramifications of what you are saying?

Aside from the USA, NATO is a joke. It doesn’t have enough manpower to do anything. There’s a story today on the Fox News site about the German Army commanding general stating that he can’t do anything because the politicians have refused to adequately fund the army. Today the Germans have about 64,000 in the army, Poland has about 60,000. They would not last long against the Russians. Britain and France have larger armies, but may not have the right equipment or make up either. Trump tried to get them to upgrade, but they wouldn’t do it.

If NATO steps into Ukraine, then you’re talking about war between nuclear powers. If Russia starts poking around Poland, Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania, then you’re talking about war between nuclear powers. If China attacks Taiwan, then you’re talking about war between nuclear powers. War between nuclear powers equals World War III.

Russia entering Ukraine is like Germany entering Czechoslovakia in 1938-39. Czechoslovakia had a sizable German minority. Ukraine has a sizable Russian minority. Hitler said Czechoslovakia was an illegitimate state. Putin says Ukraine is an illegitimate state. Hitler said the German minority in Czechoslovakia was being persecuted. Putin says the Russian minority in Ukraine is being persecuted. We all know what Hitler did a few months later. What will Putin do?

I could, but if you don't already understand, it would be a waste of time and effort.

The fact that you're even talking about them being a future member is why Putin is doing what he's doing.

We the USSR peacefully feel apart part of the deal was that the West not militarize Russia's border. But now here we are with a corrupt western puppet state attempting to do just that.

yup. pretty much every scenario has Russia running through NATO in a week. The US (hopefully) doesn't have the heart or will to get involved in this because any "meaningful" conflict with Russia would not have a winner. both sides would lose, but America would never regain her footing with this leadership.

And yet Trump is a meanie for telling NATO to meet their fricking commitments or the US is out.

That was done with the distinct purpose of telling Western Europe that the free ride is over and they need to start living up to their fricking treating obligations.

Putin has a long standing ambition to recreate the USSR under a Russian empire. The Ukrainian region has historically been at best a cadet state to Russia and has only existed as an independent country since 1991. It’s also the biggest land prize in Eastern Europe. Once Putin takes it he can chip away at Poland (similar history of Ukraine) Belarus, Slovakia, Romania, etc. with the Ukrainian territory and resources he can reform the old Warsaw pact(counter to NATO).

And right now neither the EU, GB, or NATO are prepared to stop him. If they try and fail then the whole thing spirals into a real war.

Ukraine is the reason why Ukraine hasn’t been admitted to NATO. American politicians over the years haven’t helped, but Ukraine should have made better decisions the last 20 years.

In keeping with your metaphor, Russia may be turning the key, but Ukraine left it there.

Ukraine did make better decisions.

Russia happened to steal the vote at least once as well as poison at least one opposition presidential candidate for being opposed to them.

Remember that time when Trump pointed out that Germany only having 12 operational fighters was an issue and the media made fun of him?

Or when they lost their minds because he pointed out that the US was carrying the weight for all of NATO and most of those nations weren’t even meeting their low required levels of funding because they were too busy on green initiatives that have now led to energy dependence on Russia?

Good times.

There is one small variable between the two situations. No one had nukes in the 1930s.

The problem the U.S. has is if they commit to a massive military build up in Ukraine then China will take the opportunity to invade Taiwan and then the U.S. has to pick who to save. No way between the bumblefricks in the Pentagon and the State Department, the general military fatigue in the country, and growing obsoleteness of military technology are we going to be successful splitting our focus between both China and Russia simultaneously. China is not Japan in WWII. They have plenty of natural resources and raw materials to sustain a long term military effort. The fact that Russia and China had joint military training manuevers a few months ago complicates things too. The U.S. doesn't know exactly what has been negotiated between Russia and China.

As far as the U.S. is concerned the simpler this remains the better. The U.S. just wants to have to read Putin's mind. It doesn't want to also have to figure out how China will react to various situations or what North Korea will do in various situations or any other country that could end up being a pain in the arse is going to do given any particular situation. The fewer people at the house party the less mess there is going to be to clean up the next day.
