I think most of us were surprised he wasn't named the opening night starter or even in the weekend rotation-- partly because of his ability and partly because of his return. I really haven't heard him mentioned at all with regards to this opening series. I've heard just about everyone else mentioned.

Obviously at Louisiana Tech on Wednesday is by far our most difficult game out of the first 9 prior to going to Houston. Is it possible that Devin actually is the #1 starter but Coach Johnson is strategically saving him to start against Tech instead?

If not him, then who? I haven't heard Coleman or Edwards mentioned for this weekend either. I guess they could both be candidates as well. It would be a very interesting spot to give Lansville his first college start. It will be interesting to see how they play it.

Given how terrible Maine, Towson, Southern, and Bethune-Cookman are, I will be more interested than usual in the midweek games before SEC play starts, especially this game at Tech.

I don't think most of us that follow LSU baseball closely were surprised. Great guy and a good leader he's not #1 starter as of right now.

Teams that go deep in the NCAA CWS generally have a top notch closer. I want him to be that guy for us if our weekend rotation at least has a decent pulse this year. We all know thats our glaring weakness at this point, but we’ll see what happens. I hope I’m wrong!

Why is that? Is it because he has been a starter his entire LSU career?

Seems like most people have the mind frame of he came back and "deserves" the opening night start. Jay never came off like that type of coach to me. He always said he would give him the opportunity to be a starter. I still think that opportunity is there but I also think anyone who has watched Fontenot in the past can see that him as a starter is not where his biggest potential is at. If they have other guys on this team to step up to be starters like Money, Hilliard, Hellmers, Coleman, Cooper, Lansville type guys then you will see Fontenot at the back end of the bullpen.

I've said this before but my opinion is the best situation for this team is to find other starters and have Fontenot and Reyzelman both in the same type of roll that Sims and Kopps had last season. Come in at the end of the games and get 6-9 outs to end it if need be.

I am in no way shocked that he is not a starter. He has room to improve with his slider and change up. I think this season we are going to have 2 main closers for SEC Weekends in Fontenot and Reyzelman. The two of them will get 2-3 innings of work in a weekend.

This will bode well for us come post season too. It will allow us to close multiple games out.

What else have you heard besides Money tonight and Hilliard Saturday? How does that equal hearing about "just about everyone else?" There is a Sunday starter not announced.

Am I missing something here?

Naptime definitely thought he would start game 1. I had my reservations.

As far as Tuesday, I really don't think Jay will "save" someone. I'm sure he has an idea of how he wants the weekend to play out to set up for Tuesday, but that is never set in stone.

The common misconception is that I thought Devin should be handed the game 1 ball, no matter what. Not true. His numbers were comparable to everyone but Hilliard and Hellmers. Money had a great spring. If you're looking at Money versus Devin for game 1, all things equal, Devin gets the ball because he passed up the draft to give this a shot. Devin didn't match Money in the spring, so I can see the separation there. Money also put in alot of work. I've always preferred Devin the pen. Devin just needs to be Devin. It's better for he and the team. I don't think Jay wanted him as starter in any way, shape, or form when he knows the bullpen will be so important with this staff.

I wouldn’t read too much into what the rotation looks like right now. It could be vastly different by the time conference play rolls around

Let me say this loud and clear. No one is saving an ace for a midweek game in February. No one gives a shite if we go undefeated in February or lose every game. Right now it's about finding out what you have and developing your players for later. Obviously the coaches believe they have something in Money and they want to find out if they're right

I thought Fontenot was a closer? At least that seems where he thrived.

I think the whole deal with Money is more of the potential to be a Friday night guy. Big frame guy who can easily and fluently deliver his fastball 92-94 through 5 innings maybe more. I think that is where a lot of the thought is. He put in the work and the coaches see something there. Now this is not saying I think he will be the Friday guy come SEC. I just think the coaching staff sees that potential and wants him to prove them right to put him in that spot.

Devin was one of, if not the first player to meet with Johnson after his hire. In that meeting it was disgusted that Devin would have a chance at a starting role if he stayed. I don't think anything was promised beyond he would have an opportunity.

I believe Devin is disappointed that he didn't get the start but the competition isn't over yet. The reality is though, if he struggles as a starter it wouldn't benefit him or the team. He has to be put in the position for success and that will benefit him and the team the most. If he wins that starter role down the line, then good for him.

Now how long before Merrifield takes over 3B?

This all depends on if Berry can handle it or not. If he shows he can then he will stay there. In that scenario Merrifield would have to show his hitting abilities in his opportunities to possibly go to 3rd which would send Berry to RF if nobody else shows they can take that spot.

Guess what I am getting at is they have a few moving parts that has to happen for it.

It's my understanding that we're hoping Reyzelman will be that guy.
