Newly formed Baton Rouge area commission outlines $5 billion in road/highway needs

This is only for the Baton Rouge area; not the rest of the state. That's how far behind our roads and bridges are.
This is going to be used to prioritize the area legislative delegation's agenda around getting funding for road and bridge projects.
The full list starts on page 50 of this document. PDF The Phase 1 projects are either fully funded or partially funded. Some are already under construction. These include a lot of the EBR specific projects and things like the Donaldsonville bypass or LA415 connector that are already in design and approaching construction start.
Bigger projects are outlined for later phases, and they cover projects in EBR and all the outlying parishes. Some of these projects are in the planning stages but have a very long anticipated construction timeline (such as a new Mississippi River Bridge). They also have provisions for a southern and northern bypass, although they are broken up into smaller, easier to fund chunks and utilize existing right of way where they can.
They have some other solutions, such as adding service roads to parts of I-10 and I-12, and beefing up existing highways like US 190, turning parts of US 61 or LA30 into limited access highways, etc. Also smaller scale things like adding left turn lanes to roads that don't have them.
So if you are sitting in traffic and want to know what your local legislator's priorities are for infrastructure moving forward.....this is probably going to be it.

A 5 year old knows that I-10 merging to one lane is the problem.
Legislature needs to get off its arse.
Eminent domain/close Washington St bridge and build a new bridge already.

At this point BR has done it to itself, spend the money on i49 completion and a new bridge for Lake Charles.

I always hear people complain about Washington Street exit. The problem is not the exit--it's that the interstate goes to 1 lane there. Once another lane is added, the exit won't matter. But I do agree that the median between 10 and I-110 needs to be brought further down so people on I-110 cannot cross to exit there since they now have their own exit.

Do I see a new bridge in Addis?
A little far North IMO. The bridge needs to be south of Plaquemine and bypass Baton Rouge completely for best traffic flow. Won't happen though.

You close the exit and extend that exit only lane so it doesn't go down to 1 lane

They aren't closing the exit. They already opened another exit off I-110 to prevent cars from crossing over I-10 lanes to exit at Washington. The new I-10 widening project will take it a step farther and make it impossible for cars to do this.
And yeah...the fact that I-10 merges into I-110 for some fricked up reason instead of the other way around is why traffic backs up over the bridge and into West Baton Rouge all the damn time. They are correcting it, but they've also warned that the construction will be painful and lead to delays for a couple of years.
Worth it.

So true. Another commission, another study, another report. And nothing will be done about it. Ever.
But they’ll add a tax or assessment somewhere to start saving money for these projects. And in 5 years the legislature will use those funds to pay for the state pension or Medicaid program that’s out of money. Then the road projects will get delayed for lack of matching funds and the whole cycle can repeat itself.
Meanwhile the taxpayer will continue to be fleeced for the original taxes that were supposedly “dedicated” to these road improvements. All while sittting in traffic on the same shitty roads.
I don’t see how politicians aren’t assaulted more frequently.

Vehicles exiting at Washington Street have to cross the traffic coming off the bridge. This ADDS to the 10/110 intersection.
If the Washington Street exit were closed, traffic I-10E has one less congestion issue.
Extending the right lane from Washington Street to Dalrymple would give the traffic from the bridge two uninterrupted lanes through the 10/110 intersection before having to merge into 3 lanes to cross University/City Park Lakes.

So this is what the lawmakers from the Baton Rouge region will use to advocate for more state and federal funding?
I do think all the elected officials in the area tend to pull in a different direction when it comes to major projects. There was never a unified voice in Washington or in Baton Rouge to win some of the funding needed to get these projects done. If a little organization like that is what they needed, then great.

I haven't seen this being as big of a problem since they opened the Terrace street exit a year or two ago. Granted I don't drive as regularly in Baton Rouge as I used to.
The right hand lane on I-10 still ends at Washington street for some horrible design decision made 60 years ago. But they do have plans funding in place to fix that. Construction starts soon.
