Have a pistol missing, advice needed

I’ve had contractors in and out for the last few months (finallly) repairing damage from Laura. One of my pistols is missing. It was a Colt Commander 1911. I’m bummed it’s gone but now I need to know what my next steps are.
Firstly, I don’t have a documented SN#. I bought the gun from an individual and it was in Colt case. The label on the case is damaged and doesn’t show the full SN#.
Should I report this to the police? Is it a waste of time? I told my GC about it and recognized (to him) that it’s my fault for not putting all my guns in the safe before their arrival.
The person I purchased it from bought it from an individual as well.
If I need to report it, is this a 911 call or wait and call the station during hours?

What would you do if a power tool was missing?
Do that.
Do that.

I’d call the non emergency line during normal hours. Couldn’t hurt. But nothing will come of it. If they treat it anything like a vehicle break in they’ll write the description and SN, which you don’t have, and that’s it. They’ll call you if it turns up, usually after it’s used in a crime.
That’s if you had the numbers and they don’t get filed off before the crime.
99/100 stolen guns don’t come back.

No, it's not a 911 call. I'd report it just in case it gets traced back to you when its inevitably used in a crime; may save you some hassle. They'll go right to the original buyer and if the sales were between known individuals they may make it to you if the crime was serious enough.

Call the sheriffs office tomorrow and make a report with as much info as you have , nothing will come of it but it is the right thing to do
Also this is a great time to look into an insurance policy for your guns, check out the firearms and collectiables policy from eastern insurance, about 150/yr, and you would be getting replacement cost minus $100 deductible right now, you don’t have to list your guns and get $40k worth of coverage

Just make sure it's gone.
I know someone who thought a contractor took some items and called the cops, made a report and the guy became a suspect.
Only days later, the stolen items turned up misplaced in the house.

If you have time to post on the OB and wait for suggestions, then it's not a 911 call.

I just learned this the hard way, if you have ANYTHING OF VALUE in your home lock it the frick up if you are getting g work done.
Many of the lower level tradesmen or helpers are drug addicts and criminals. They will take anything not nailed down.
Put up cameras. Lock your shite up. Hide your shite in areas they have no access to and watch them like a hawk.
If I had my way we would go Genghis Khan or Middle East on that arse, when you get your fricking hand cut off their isn't much theft.

2. What is a GC ? NVM - Figured out you meant garbage collector (or General Contractor).

hate to say it but sounds like you're just SOL on the situation.

Document your serial numbers. I’ve recovered stolen guns twice now.
Every gun I have has a photo of both sides and a photo of the serial saved in a couple of locations.

I would do nothing and definitely not report it to the police. There is no record of you owning it so you have nothing to worry about if it is ever used in a crime; can’t be traced back to you.
Never volunteer information you don’t need to give.
In the future, lock up what you don’t want stolen or hover over the contractors.
Bad situation all around.

Still it was not your fault the pistol was stolen. There being no paper trail to you gives you the option of not reporting it stolen and even if you do report it, the police might investigate the GC's employees and find the gun but if you can't prove it is yours you may not get it back anyway. On the other hand if the gun is used in a crime and the guy who took it tells the cops where it came from they may ask you why you didn't report it stolen. I say report it, play it safe.

The police couldn't find records of half my arrest when I was researching for my CCL so I know they won't find the sticky note where they scribbled: "Dlauw lost Colt, no serial#"
Tough break man.
