In College Drive ambush slaying of ex-girlfriend, man sentenced to 12 years

quote:

Billy G. Pettice, 41, had been scheduled to stand trial this week on a second-degree murder charge in the slaying of Dedawn Bush, 20, and would have faced a mandatory term of life behind bars if convicted as charged.

quote:

State District Judge Eboni Johnson-Rose sentenced Pettice under the terms of a plea agreement to concurrent terms of 12 years for manslaughter, five years for aggravated assault with a firearm and six months for domestic abuse battery.

Would the DA have agreed to the 12 year deal? Or does the judge make the call on her own? Either way, 12 years is troubling in this case.

Wrong crowd for this thread. Half the board thinks their ex-wife deserves to be murdered.

The DA writes the plea agreement.

I definitely have questions for the DA then. In addition to killing an ex, the article also states:

quote:

Pettice also pleaded guilty Monday to aggravated assault with a firearm and domestic abuse battery after he was accused in November of attacking a different woman, the mother of his two young children, while free on bond in Bush's killing.

quote:

Police said Pettice strangled the woman while holding a gun to her head and threatening to kill her. Their children, ages 4 and 7, witnessed the assault, an arrest report says.

Why would the DA agree to this?

So the DA and defense agreed to it.

Judge can change the terms but rarely does.

Either they don't think their evidence is that strong, or they just don't want to deal with a trial.

The recommendation was likely part of the deal but ultimately the judge can sentence him to less/more.

I think the DA needs to answer some questions then.

It is. But no one is pleading to that and the state isn't paying hundreds of thousands for the trial.

That's a second woman he assaulted while out on bond in addition to killing the ex. That's why I find 12 years extremely troubling in this case.
