Are the homes zoned for Eanes really all above 1.1 million dollars at this point?

3-4 years ago, you could definitely find homes for 800K or so.

Those are all good highschools, but I would scratch Leander and Hutto at your price point. The only good Austin ISD schools have already been mentioned.

I've lived West of 35 in Round Rock for 16 years and love it. My sons elementary has been great, his middle seems to be ok from what I know about it, and Round Rock Highschool will be a good spot for him. The other highschool on RR that I would consider sending my kid is Cedar Ridge.

Getting Downtown has gotten much easier with the toll roads and Mopac toll lane. (Be prepared for lots of tolls) I avoid 35 almost all times. I moved here before the toll roads and it was a bitch going north to south. Its still tough but easier with the tolls.

Round Rock and other suburbs have changed a good bit over the years with liberals infiltrating from Austin. RR and Williamson county at one point was a great conservative community compared to Austin but shifting populations has tainted that some. It's still conservative but the school board has gone woke and the elections have gotten tighter.

There is a nice little downtown area in RR that I frequent all the time and we are real close to the domain. I'm getting older but I don't remember the last time I went to Downtown Austin for night life other than a concert.

Do athletics play a part in your school decision? I coach Round Rock kids in Pop Warner and follow local football. Westlake, Lake Travis, and Vandergrift are the powerhouses on that front. Liberty Hill has a great football culture which the town supports and its a good ISD.

All in all, if your wife prefers newer communities Lake Travis, might be the ticket. It's beautiful out there in the hills. Close to the lake (which is one of the best parts of the ATX) and not a terrible commute downtown. Otherwise if you choose the north side of the metro your probably looking around 183 to Liberty Hill or Ronald Regan Corridor for nice new builds. I like Georgetown and there are a bunch of new communities but I've always heard that Georgetown ISD is not that great.

I cant help you out much on the south side of the metro but Dripping Springs and Hays county have blown up and have good ISD's

As for me, I'm staying in West Round Rock till my kid finishes high school and I'm moving to New Braunfels, Marble Falls, Burnet, or Llano next.

Other than reading ratings/reviews on Great Schools and the TEA site, how can one go about finding out more about how good individual schools are in terms of academics, extra curricular activities etc. other than speaking to actaul parents at those schools? For us, in order of priority 1) Academics, 2) Extra curricular activities, 3) Sports are important. We just want our kids to be well rounded individuals with a chance to get into good colleges throughout the country after high school, not just UT colleges. Both my wife and I have graduate degrees, so for us education is very important - at least during Elementary and Middle schools - unless somehow our kids show some extraordinary athletic abilities that we are not aware of and want to play sports seriously as they grow up, which is also fine. But we certainly want to give them a good educational foundation during their younger years.

Pro Tip: Move to Elon Musk school district

Almost all the suburbs will have great schools. We're in Williamson county, and love it up here.
