Yesterday evening hunting in Lorman Mississippi Bucks are rutting chasing Does thru the bottoms and food plots. I been hunting a main frame 10 with 2 kickers on his left side and I messed up bad. About 4:45 4 Does came into the plot one was looking back and here he comes chased a smaller buck out the plot. I blew a grunt call and he popped up about 150 yards 2 the left of me I put the cross hairs on him and click I forgot to load one in the chamber. Pulled the bolt back as quite as I can and he either heard me are smelled me. He took off like a bat out of hell. Grunted again and never came back out. I’ll never forgive myself for this. I didn’t even want to go this morning. I thought about this all night.

I’ve been there. Luckily I was able to get one in without him running.

That sucks but it happens. I did that earlier this season for the first time. hunting an unfamiliar blind and I was still getting settled in when he came out. no chance for a reload, he was moving quick and it was a "if he slows or pauses in this gap in the brush I'll shoot him. He did his part, I got a loud click, and he resumed his trot. Someone else on our lease shot him a week later.

Man that sucks. You need to develop a process of checks each time you go out .
Bow hunting - check release, check broadheads are tight make sure you can draw the bow unobstructed.
Rifle- check chamber I stand, check there is no mud on scope, check to make sure I can get turned to where a deer shouldn’t come from.

Not gonna tell you how I learned these

To make you feel a little better, when I was 16 I pull my rifle out of the case in the morning. In the dark. Get all the way to my stand, load it and get ready. As it is breaking daylight I see there is a trigger lock on my rifle. My damn brother had put it on there being funny. I tried to pry it with my pocket knife, no luck. I was too deep and would have messed up other members hunts if I had gone back for the key.

Oh well, I won't see shite worth shooting anyway. Well you know how that goes, damn luck. A nice wide 7 point walks up to the stand. At one point I had the muzzle pointed at him and was trying to get the gun to go off. At 16 years old that deer would have made all my dreams come true. Hold on, I need to find a pillow to cry in 28 years later.

Yes sir it sucks. Especially all the work we put in from plots to constantly feeding checking trail cans cutting branches. The reward would’ve been well worth it. I hoping he shows this evening are tomorrow morning. We have 75 percent chance of rain tomorrow and my vacation is over back to work Monday
