I’m debating watching this Netflix movie. I’ve been itching to watch a western lately and saw this come up on my feed. Anybody seen it?

It's messed up, but worth a watch. Very well written. It's more of a drama than a story about the west. It's a weird drama written in western times... lol. Hope that helps.

Great cast, but it's messed up, not worth a watch.

So for someone who likes fricked up movies, is this a green light?

Slow and boring IMO. Will probably win the Oscar just for that.

Check out Old Henry on Amazon if your looking for a western .

I went in expecting to not like it based off the board's reviews.
My wife really wanted to watch it so we checked it out.
I liked it a lot more than I expected I would. But probably just because I love movies set in that time period and in that setting.
I also went in with low expectations.

The movie presents some pretty cool ideas about performative behaviors, and it uses music in a really cool way. Not to mention the Johnny Greenwood score is top notch.

It was so boring I turned it off and went to Wiki. Read the ending and thanked my decision

I’ve seen it and would not recommend it but to each his own. You might like it. Let us know what you thought after you watch it.

I liked it a lot. Great scenery and actors, interesting characters, and not the usual predictable schlock.
It's not a shoot 'em up or action flick. More of a sibling drama in a western setting.

I can't think of any good reason someone could have for downvoting this recommendation unless they just have an unreasonable dislike for westerns.

I liked it. Very different. Wife hated it. Very different.

Weird story and ending. If you want a western just pop in Open Range. Can't go wrong with Montana (even though I believe this is filmed in Canada), Costner, & Duvall.

Isn't this movie basically about an a-hole dad who has a gay son in the old west?

No. It just has a weird theme and details to it. Unlike any western genre film I've ever seen. It had me wonder if this storyline would have been a better fit for a completely different genre and setting.
I don't watch a lot of Westerns but when I do (inb4 dos reference) it's for the scenery and the overall style. examples being:
scenery: Open Range (as mentioned above)
style: Tombstone
Man From Snowy River isn't bad. Gets a little love heavy at times, but that's being picky.
Lonesome Dove is good, but it's been over 15 years since watching it. I remember it being pretty long.
True Grit (2010). I know I'm aging myself by referencing the remake over the original, but I remember thinking it was pretty good. I really like Jeff Bridges and Josh Brolin. Hailee Steinfeld has come a long way since then.
Sorry if this post came off as "thread jacking"

Westerns are remembered now for their masculine iconography. Power of the Dog is explicitly interrogating that iconography. I think that's why it feels weird, but the same plot wouldn't work the same way in a different genre.
This is why I mentioned ideas in my earlier post. I like the movie, but it seems designed to keep the audience at an emotional remove, thus making it hard to truly love (and probably a big reason several people here actively dislike it). I respect and mostly enjoy the intellectual exercise, but it's an intellectual exercise.

Or the original Lonesome Dove if you’ve never seen it

I just powered my way through the first hour, I finally just quit and looked up the synopsis. The official plot summary calls Cumberbatch's character "charismatic" which is hilarious because I was bored out of my mind by him and everybody else
