So yesterday driving on the interstate I noticed the truck, 2016 GMC Sierra with 5.3, shuttering slightly while cruising. I was maintaining a constant speed on the interstate and at first it was hard for me to tell if it was the truck or small bumps in the road I was going over. Finally figured it was the engine. Also it is making a different noise now when accelerating, almost a whining noise, it is not severe, I had to turn the radio off to make sure what I was hearing. it is clearer today though.

There are no lights on the dash and it is intermittent but seems to becoming more prevalent.

TIA

Shuttering bumpy feeling sounds like a whee balance issue. Not a mechanic but have had that issue many times on many vehicles. That’s all i got.

ETA - is it only at certain speeds? Like 65-70? Then smooths out again or is it constant no matter the speed?

It is not an balance issue, started about 1/2 to Houston while on the interstate and definitely emanating from the engine/transmission. Thinking more engine though because it happen when not shifting gears.

My 2019 5.3L Chevy had a shift control module go out at about 9k miles and it was shuttering some, the RPMs were erratic but no whine sound. Mine was doing it when it was on cruise control. If I tried to slam the gas and make it do it it wouldn’t do it, it wasn’t acting like a trans slip but yet still felt like it.
Not sure if that helps or not

6 speed or 8 speed GH22?
I work at a GMC dealership and we have torque converter issues, sometimes they feel like you're driving over rumble strips.

May have something to do with the Active Fuel Management. I’d have it scanned either way. There may be something in the history.

Hate to tell you but that GM 5.3 specifically from 2015-2018 is a shitty engine.

I sold mine when the lifters started ticking because you can’t just repair one….it’s all at once ($4000) and of course, it happened at 65k miles and they told me it was normal….then at 100k (past my warranty) it was critical and the cam shaft would go out next.

frick GM tbh

Mileage around 130k? Pull your trans dip stick and see if it smells scorched and see if the fluid is black.
Or could be some active fuel management concern.

Just had the same thing happen to my 2016 Silverado in April at 103K miles. Turns out it was the transmission, specifically the torque converter coming apart, and it is apparently a common issue with that transmission model (6L80). Rebuild ended up costing 4K.

Had the same "shuttering" noise/vibration with my '17 F150 with the 5.0. It also has a 6 speed trans. I drained the trans fluid, replaced with new and also added a friction additive. It helped immediately. But a year later it's back to doing it again. It hasn't gotten any worse or any better. I really could notice it when I was cruising along the interstate and would barely begin to give it gas. You could hear and feel it shutter ever so slightly.

No truck is perfect.

No this isn't something that just isn't '"perfect", something is definitely wrong.

Just checked the transmission fluid, not black but definitely not in good shape.

Guess I will be calling around to see what a transmission rebuild or torque converter swap will cost.

Shitty thing is I am in Houston for work and have to drive 5.5 hrs home next tues.

Shittier thing is it’s going to take forever for them to get to you then get the parts.

Had to change transmission on 2015 recently. Mechanic said it’s been pretty common in GMC from this time frame. Happened at about 85,000 miles. “Only” $3000 and change and a 3 year warranty from my guy, so not too painful.

Breaux Bridge. Small shop that I was referred to by a friend. I’ll have to look up the name. I’ll post it when I find it. Only took him about 2-1/2 weeks, most of which was waiting for the transmission to get shipped.
