Why not go after young Briles?

I can’t think of one single reason why they wouldn’t.

yards because that’s not a very precise measure of efficiency in moving the ball. Let’s measure efficiency in both running the ball and in passing
yard us a horrible measuring stick for offensive success.

It's completely dependant on situations. Does a team play from behind a lot? Bad field position? Prevent defenses?

I don’t give a frick if the OC wants to run a Wing T offense as long as they score points.

This guys took a bunch of scrubs that no P5 school wanted and turned them into Something respectable. The idea od him toying with the talent LSU can accumulate is intriguing.

Kelly is the OC at Cincinnati?

Nope, but he’s the boss at LSU and has already said it’s going to be his Offense.

I would still want to see points per game, 3rd down efficiency, and red zone scoring percentages before worrying about yards.

10 drives of 60-70 yards gives you 600-700 yards a game, but could also result in 0 points

Yards per play, as opposed to total offense, is a better marker of how well an offense can move the ball than scoring offense. If a team has a mediocre offense but starts every drive with excellent field position, that can skew their scoring offense to appear better than they are or vice-versa. Scoring offense also can be skewed downward if a team with an excellent offense plays teams that play slower, as that reduces the number of possessions, and thus reduces the points you can score. Using yards/play eliminates both of those variables.

Cincinnati was also 9th in the nation at yards per play this year, so their scoring offense wasn't that skewed this season.

If you want to go further and compare apples to apples, you can G5-adjust the yards per play to see how Cinci fared against teams on their level.

When you do that, Cinci averaged 7.18 yards/play, which is good for about 3rd in the nation.

2011 LSU averaged a ton of points per game but that was a terrible offense.

Do yards or points win you games?

Explain how you score a lot of points without gaining yards. This all or nothing analysis is stupid. Of course yards per game matters and so does ppg. But neither alone tells the full story. There's a lot of data to consider.
