Small pier on a finger off of a lake in North Louisiana. Trying to attract fish for the kids to catch. Ideas?

Canned dog food with holes poked in the can on a string. Honestly don't have that much experience with it but I know people who swear by it.

This right here does work, also cornmeal in a coffee can with holes poked in it. This attracts shiners/ minnows which then attracts Crappie/ Bass and other fish.

If you can find a clean or hard spot get a couple of lbs of pea gravel and pour on the bottom, the chinquapin bream love it while spawning.
We have a camp on D'Arbonne with a natural drain by our boat house (clean bottom), we do this and they spawn every year in the same spot.

Floating multi species fish feed at tractor supply if you can consistently feed. It's what I used when I lived on a 40 acre pond, the bream would rise to the surface when I walked to edge of the bank, they would make the water boil, would be entertaining for the kids. It takes about 1-2 weeks for the fish to get it figured out. I had to sink tree tops for cover where I feed at to get the fish to stay there all the time though.

can also poke holes all over the cans and lower them down to the bottom in a burlap or crawfish sack

Block of velveeta cheese inside Tupperware with 1/4” holes drilled on all sides. The guaranteed attractant!

I mean...how do you even discover that this works?

Put some brush piles out. And then get an underwater dock light. You will catch them at night. And every night you'll have to shoo the other fishermen away. Fish will also be there during the day.

This is also my method. The only difference is I use the tractor supply Sportsman's Choice Trophy feed, some of it floats, and some of it sinks, some pellets big, some pellets small, so both small and big fish can feed. And instead of tree tops, it's neighbor's Christmas trees.
OP be advised, this also attracts turtles too. They can become a nuisance. I now carry a bb pistol to deter turtles and geese when I feed.

Underwater green light around a dock will entertain those kids every night of the year
