They have a very devoted following, but the sound just doesn’t jive with me. What makes/made them so appealing and enduring?

Chevelle does the push and pull of heavy riffs with soaring vocals and screams in an a catchy, accessible way, but the Deftones’ sound just seems…bland in comparison.

There are some songs I like: Minerva, Change in the House of Flies, Entombed, Swerve City - the rest just all sound the same to me.

That's the appeal of Deftones to me, is that they don't go for catchy/accessible. They aren't afraid to experiment and explore within the boundaries of their sound, and they wind up finding a lot of interesting space that other similar bands never get into. They aren't prog but they definitely have some prog tendencies.

Chevelle is a blatant Deftones rip off. In fact, their most popular song is a plagiarism of Be Quiet and Drive by Deftones.

Chevelle spent too much time at the Hot Carling Academy.

Early Chevelle (Point #1) sounded like more like a Tool (Undertow era) ripoff.. even the videos from that album had a Tool vibe, but it was still a pretty good album... I've seen them live twice (granted both times the shows were free), but I enjoyed them... I find them pretty inoffensive compared to a majority of bands that get radio play

If you’re saying that, I doubt you’ll do it, but I suggest going through their albums chronologically.

Saw them at a festival a few years ago. The entire crowd didn’t get Deftones.

Possibly one of the deadest crowds I’ve ever seen. Chino was doing everything he could to get a reaction, climbing amps, knocking amps and mic stands over…no reaction, nothing. As they walked off stage, he swept his arm across an amp in disgust that had about 7/8 water bottles on it back stage. Stage hands we’re freaking out trying to clean up.

Possibly a top 10 worst performance I have ever seen. If I see them on a show I purposefully don’t buy tickets.

Yeah I’ve seen them 5 times

Def sounds better on the albums.

It really depends. I've seen them twice. The first time they were definitely off, and Chino sounded sick (his voice was shot). The second time, they were very tight and sounded fantastic.

That said, I wouldn't expect most festival crowds to appreciate their brand of metal, which is heavily shoegaze and space rock influenced.

Why though?

Assuming this isn't just trolling to say Chevelle is better than Deftones, enjoy the songs you like, move on with the rest.

Ultimately, none of this shite is objectively good or bad. We pretend that there is some actual objective standard because arguing about music is fun.

If anything, just go back and give their shite a listen from time to time. Some of my favorite bands I didn't jibe with at all initially. Then one day, I found something there I did like. Likewise, other bands I lived and died by when I was younger I barely listen to anymore.

Things strike you differently at different times. Unfortunately, there is a propensity to conflate it appealing or not appealing to you later in life as having grown some sort of "wisdom" necessary to enjoy it or not enjoy it any longer, but I think that is mostly untrue.

You hated it, but you still seemed to watch the entire set to it's end?

I saw them in Mobile during the Koi Tour, one of the best live shows I’ve seen. They killed it.

I haven't listened to them in years, but was a fan when I was younger. I'd consider them sort of a metal version of My Bloody Valentine. The vocals are more of a sonic texture than melodic and the lyrics are an afterthought. Around the Fur is their definitive sound in my opinion, but White Pony is probably their best album overall. I agree that most of their stuff after that sounds repetitive.
