You can order the upgraded Vanguard models from Weatherby directly. If I was the OP that's what I would be getting.

The Howa weight is what’s kept me away. It’s easy to make a decent feature rich 8# rifle. I would like a Mini.

This. And I really like the 3 stage safety. Love my Howas... Would put those up against any.

What about the older savage 110’s? Found one at a pawn shop yesterday. It’s the one without the detachable mag… which I like better than the cheap plastic ones on most guns these days

Yeah, I was in the market for one for my son. Found a 30-06 but I thought it was a little high for a used one. It had a cheap scope, which I don’t need. I have a Leupold to put on it. I may go back and get it tomorrow

I love savage rifles. The barrel nut and floating bolt face were great ways to cut machining costs way down and still deliver a really accurate rifle.

Dumb as it sounds, I just hate how they don't have a bolt shroud behind the handle. Technically there's no reason for it, and that design makes tons of sense. I just think it looks ugly.

From the little I've seen of the very expensive nosler rifles, they sure look a lot like a howa 1500

There's a "rumor" on the 'net the Nosler Model 48 is actually made by Howa. I found I needed some parts (ejector spring and cross bolt pin) for the bolt on my Nosler Custom Handgun (a slightly modified Model 48 rifle action). Nosler Customer Service was unresponsive. I asked Howa if they made the NCH and they said no. I ended up ordering the parts from Midway (labeled Howa Model 1500/Weather Vanguard) and they fit and work fine. Nosler eventually sent the parts and they're identical to the Howa parts. So it's possible the Model 48 is made by Howa and fitted w/ a Shilen barrel.

Savage 110/Thread

Its advanced engineering AccuTrigger, floating bolt head and a barrel nut allows for precise headspacing.

The fact that it isn't mentioned more in this thread, especially with people giving a fricking list, means that people are either name whores, or just haven't shot enough. Nothing against the names listed, but if you were to shoot the 110 it would definitely be at the top of everyone's list.

I used to have a 116 and loved it. Started spending too much time on the internet and fell in love with Browning BAR’s and the wooden stock stainless barrel look. Traded the Savage in for a Browning BAR White Gold Medallion…. Miss the accuracy and trigger of the Savage, but that BAR sure is pretty.

I haven’t shopped for a rifle since I bought my boys their current guns probably 15 years ago, bought my oldest a Remington 700 CDL with the fluted stainless barrel and my youngest an X-Bolt. Both are great guns. I’m still shooting my two early 1990’s Model 70’s, but have the itch to get another. Are the Model 70 Featherweights still worth a look? I’d like to get something a little lighter for my elk hunt next year.

Yea. They're arguably the best they've ever been right now, including pre-64. A little pretty for my liking for an elk rifle, so I bought the extreme weather which is a damn fine rifle. Proper fiberglass aluminum bedded stock.

The plain ol sporter model 70 is damn nice and worth a look also. I almost bought that instead of the extreme weather.

I think my next one will be a featherweight .30-06 for my boy if he likes hunting.

Man, I shouldn’t have read this thread because now I want to add a new rifle and caliber to the collection.

Tell me about it

I have been wanting to break down my Remington 700 30-06 and upgrade/lighten it up

Problem is, once I price most of the stuff I could buy a new gun

Can’t speak for the newer x-bolts but I love my browning a-bolt from the mid 90’s. It’s a tack driver and the action is smooth as silk. No need to ever replace it. Have the stainless stalker with boss in 270
