LSU v. Georgetown 1989

I forgot just how great a game this was. Every tiger gave it his all that day. The game was scheduled before the season started. At the time, everyone thought it was going to be a matchup of the two best Freshmen centers - Alonzo Mourning and Stanley Roberts. Unfortunately for LSU Roberts, along with Maurice Williamson, Harold Boudreaux, and Lenear Burns were ineligible. LSU still won with Ricky Blanton, Wayne Sims, and Vernel Singleton (none taller than 6'7") playing forward. Even though CJ scored 26 points, Georgetown defensed him well. What stood out to me was how effective Sims was scoring (18 points in the first half), what a big part walk-on Dennis Tracey played (4 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and great D), and how effective Blanton was playing against the 6'11" Mourning on both offense and defense. Even a Freshman Geert Hammink put in some quality minutes and injured Russell Grant, knee brace and all, had the guts to take the final shot. That shot, partially blocked by Mourning went to Blanton who put in the game-winner.
Georgetown would have been ranked no. 1 had they won (Illinois lost earlier). This was my favorite game of the 1989 season - beating a no. 2-ranked Georgetown at the Super Dome in front of 66,000 people. Enjoy.

I was legit at this game. I was not even into basketball at the time as a kid. I would have been 11.

Dwayne Bryant was a HS Parade AA who prepped at De La Salle. He was one of many NOLA kids who played for John Thompson at Georgetown. Others included: Jaren Jackson (Cohen), Perry McDonald (Carver), Johnathon Edwards (OP Walker), Duane Spencer (Cohen).

Awesome, thanks for the link. I have never seen the full broadcast.
That was my freshman year, and we had really good seats down low thanks to my Uncle, a huge Tiger fan. Had a great view of the final shot.
Russel Grant jacking up a shot at the end trying to be the hero

I was at that game. Wayne Sims kicking the ball back out to Blanton on the last play instead of taking the layup was one of the smartest, most selfless things I’ve seen a Tiger in inform do.

I was there. Court looked tiny in the vast e layout of the Dome. growing up an LSU kid in the 80s was a great time as a fan.

Amazing longevity and versatility as 32 years later he is starring in the NFL as a wide receiver.

I remember how buff Wayne Simms was with his stretch marks... would not want to tango with him.

Think how good a team it would have been if Roberts, Williamson, Boudreaux, and Burns were all eligible. The next year they had Shaq, but Blanton had graduated. Roberts was a dominant and talented center. It's too bad we only had him one year and because he shared the stage with Shaq I don't think we got to see just how truly dominant he was.

Say what you will about Daddy Dale..but we used to play everybody back in the day. As a student, I remember camping out at the Assembly Center on numerous occasions. Houston and Phi Slamma Jamma was a huge game my sophomore year..too bad we came up short..but was great fun.

Well who really knows the true attendance but I know for a fact that it was reported after the game as 54,321. That’s a number sequence that you just don’t forget. Regardless, I was in that number with my roommates and a couple of other buddies. We were students at the time. What a blast we had that day.
Also remember the next day when we watched the VHS tape of it we had recorded, Dale Brown in the waning minutes with his superior bench coaching in the huddle during a timeout pointing at each of the players in the game at the time… Are we gonna win this game? Are we gonna win this game? Are we gonna win this game? and so on. Oh Dale.

The Superdome pioneered the full stadium seating arrangements they now use for every final four. Before 2010-ish they only used half stadium set ups. But the Superdome was using full stadium set ups since the 80s.
