The random holiday Addai thread got me wondering what the hell it must have taken to get Faulk to go San Diego State. Anyone remember any rumors or details as to what got him to choose San Diego State???

You ever spent any time in San Diego?

shite, if I grew up in the Desire projects and graduated from Carver in 1990, I'd have gone there too as soon as they offered me a scholly.

Not going to jail and getting away from the folks that were a problem for him at home.

The easiest way to disentangle from negative people in you life is to move across the country from them.

At least those were the rumors way back when. They may not have been true but I always heard that the separation from a few shady friends gave him some perspective to make sure he stayed on track.

ETA: And getting to play running back.

Curtis Johnson was the New Orleans connection. He and an unknown position coach by the name of Sean Payton were coaching at SDSU.

If I recall San Diego State was one of the few schools that recruited him as a running back. Most if the blue bloods at the time recruited him as a DB.

That’s nuts that he had to go there to play running back. How were there that many schools to undervalue his talent at running back? Yeesh

Because he was that talented as a defensive back. Probably would have still been a hall of famer if he stuck with it.

Steve McNair ended up at alcorn because they let him play qb. Kids get overlooked all the time.

Happens all the time both ways.

LSU signed Devin white partly because they promised him a chance to play RB. He played RB in the spring his freshman year then we had some injuries at LBer so he went full time on that side of the ball and never looked back.

In LSU’s defense. Faulk would’ve been a helluva DB too.

11 ints his senior year.

6 returned for tds.

SDSU gave him the opportunity to play RB.

No one else would guarantee it.

Same for Dak Prescott. Teams wanted him to play a different position

The real question is how Curtis Johnson signed Fred Harris out of Shreveport in the same class.

Harris was the Gatorade player of the year in Louisiana and one of the state’s top recruits that year.

Harris had trouble qualifying. I don’t know if he ever played. Marshall Faulk turned into a superstar. Everyone remembers Faulk, but Fred Harris was the big story on signing day.

This. Same reason Russell Shepard ended up at LSU instead of Texas.
