Arnsparger Used to Opt Out of Bowl Games

Went 0-3 in them. I got the impression he only cared about winning championships and bowl games without natty chances were an afterthought. Dude was 35 yrs ahead of his time.
Between NIL, the portal, and opt-outs it's just a different era of CFB.
There is a paradigm shift going on in bowl games. Apart from the playoff, if seniors and draft eligible jrs/sophs want to play, then fine, but the emphasis ought to be on the upcoming season. That would generate more interest.
ETA: one way to entice draft eligible players to play is for the bowl sponsors to pay 'em. Use their NIL in advertisements and pay 'em.

The liberty bowl year he had the team "meet" in Memphis I believe. Meaning players had to get there on their own.
Christmas eve or day dinner was microwaved burritos at the 7-11 for some players if I remember that story correctly.

This is interesting. Wonder if this sort of thing starts happening.

I agree with this. The NFL pays their players for making the playoffs and Superbowl.

Arnsparger is also the douche that told LSU to hire someone else over Spurrier and then went to Florida and hired him. He did more to hurt LSU football than any Coach in my lifetime.

Arnsparger did care about bowl games and spoke if players’ false emotions leading to those games and he cited that in reference to the Miami of Ohio game as well….
He always prepared his teams but sometimes the players failed to prepare themselves!!!

Throw in the ultra soft "look at me" and "self first" generation and college football is destroyed as we knew it.

The NIL intent was to give kids the ability to make some cash while in school and playing ball.
The end result is enticing players to come to your school by outbidding your competitor!
It will get out of hand quick, and hard to reverse, IMO.

That is an excuse for losing.
Kids did not Opt out.
He was a poor coach in bowl games.
The players played to win but kept losing - Nebraska was too physical for the Tigers in the Sugar Bowl under his leadership.
