With the possibility (yes, I know, both teams have to play several games between now and then!) that there will be a matchup in Tiger Stadium between a couple of high ranking teams in a few weeks, I looked back over the history of LSU football for previous games matching high ranking teams, and came up with these (all AP rankings at the time of the game):

Oct. 31, 1959. LSU #1 vs. Ole Miss #3

Nov. 1, 1958. LSU #1 vs. Ole Miss #6

Nov. 4, 1961. Ole Miss #2 vs. LSU #6 ***

Nov. 11, 1972. BAMA #2 vs. LSU #6**

Nov. 22, 1973. BAMA #2 vs. LSU #7

Nov. 21, 1970. NotreDame #2 vs. LSU #7*

Oct. 6, 2007. LSU #1 vs. Fla. #9

Nov. 3, 1962. LSU #4 vs. Ole Miss #6

***If Ole Miss had won this game, they probably would have been ranked #1 the next week (the then #1, Michigan State, had already lost that same day).

** Not in TS - game in Birmingham.

* Not in TS - game in South Bend [I should have know, I was there!]

Anybody think of any others?

ETA: Corrected a few mistakes.

Yes, I think LSU was #2 and V Tech was #7 when we beat the piss out of them.

First of all, the 70 Notre Dame loss and the 72 Alabama loss were AWAY games. Second, our record in those eight games you mentioned is a dazzling 4-4, neither very impressive nor reassuring. And if you're referring to the Alabama game next month, don't even bother. Our loss at Florida in 9 days will make sure we are out of the top ten by then.

Don't know about the Coaches Poll, but UGA was 7 and we were 11 in the Ap Poll leading into that game.

Question:

When Ohio State played at LSU in 88 or 89, what were they ranked?

Weren't we number 2? Hence the uproar when #1 USC lost?

#1 in the AP, #2 in the coaches. LSU had jumped SC the week before in the AP after SC had struggled with Washington

Yes, but LSU was only ranked #20 going into that game.

Wasn't USC # 1 when they visited LSU in 1979?
