Good news Tigerdroppings posters: Autism indicator now available for Louisiana licenses

Autism spectrum disorder is not a physical disability, but it can create obstacles.
Which is why the Office of Motor Vehicles is adding an optional autism indicator to driver’s licenses for those who qualify.
“I think it’s a win-win for both law enforcement and the autism community. It’s important that law enforcement knows who they’re dealing with and I don’t want to speak for law enforcement or the autism community, but I think it raises situational awareness for law enforcement officers when they know they may be dealing with someone who is autistic,” said OMV Public Information Officer Matthew Boudreax.
The indication is shown as a puzzle piece on the license.
It can also include the initials “AN” if the driver has autism and needs accommodations. The indicator is also under the drivers picture.
Boudreaux said Louisiana law requires the OMV to provide an autism designation if a driver who qualifies requests it.
“Of course, they train to deal with all kinds of different drivers whether it be deaf or hard-of-hearing, combat veterans, and of course autistic, and this law requires that law enforcement officers do a certain amount of training dealing with autistic individuals.”
You can get the indicator at your local OMV. And keep in mind many offices still ask that you make an appointment online ahead of time.
Applicants must provide one of the following documents to the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles in order to have the designation added:
Medical Examiner’s Certification of Autism Spectrum Disorder form completed by the medical or mental health professional
A statement from a qualified mental health professional licensed in Louisiana or any other state or territory of the United States verifying the applicant’s disability.

Wow! I just looked at the photo of the ID.
Talk about awful luck to have Autism and also have the last name “Autism”.

To hell with the puzzle pieces to identify autistic folks. Just put their Tigerdroppings handle on the license.

I was just thinking about this the other day and thought there should be some indicator for police. I was thinking more along the lines of a license plate or a state issued sticker. Sometimes it's a bit too late and the situation escalates before a cop can get that ID from the driver.
* I have a 16yo son on the spectrum who was diagnosed with apraxia at 3. So I tend to view things like this differently.

While I think this is a good idea, it all depends on the cop to recognize it and correctly identify how to alter their attitude, demeanor, etc
Ill be honest and say that until I initially heard about this, I didnt know they had the same thing for those who are hard of hearing. I am half deaf with no hearing at all on one side and sometimes, simply instructions are lost on me. I once got thrown against the wall by a cop at the Houston airport for ignoring a TSA agent. I wasn't ignoring them on purpose I just had no clue they were talking to me or what they were saying....NOW, I list it ahead of time on all of my flights and it comes with priority boarding which also makes things easier because I can never hear any gate announcements

If autism affects the individual so much that he or she needs an indicator on the license to notify police so the police can treat him or her differently, then perhaps the individual isn’t in the best shape to drive an automobile?

With a name like Autism his chances were never too great

I feel like I could qualify for autism if I found the right doctor. Can you get food stamps if you get it?
