Player's vs Player's distance irons

I am a 6 handicap. My iron game is what is holding me back. I've gone back and forth over the year from a player's to a player's distance iron with no real change in performance.
What are your thoughts on Player's (cavity backs) vs Player's distance or dare I even throw out the idea of ......blades/muscle backs?

what about the iron is holding you back? Distance/shot shaping/general contact? that is going to determine what iron you should be looking for.

Probably this.
When I am missing, its out on the toe (thank GOD its not the very inner heel anymore). I have this thought that with a smaller face, there is less to miss. I think I'm just being lazy swinging these 565's.
I had a great round Sunday, and was hitting the irons well (for me)
I have hit these irons very well in the past. I guess I'm having some nostalgia of my Apex pros.

I have run through more sets than I care to admit. To me, the design itself isn't important at all. The two most important things are: a look that inspires confidence to you, and center contact. Yeah, thanks Mr. Obvious
In addition, the wrong shaft can totally ruing your experience. I have had a few sets too stiff or wrong profile, and I could barely advance the ball. Too soft is way more forgiving.

I feel the same sometimes about forgiving clubs making me get lazy with my swing. That’s when I bring out the blades for a while. When I feel like my striking is inconsistent but I’m not being penalized at all, I play the blades for about 5-10 rounds and it helps me focus on nothing but contact. My game always seems to bounce back after that.

you better be sticking with the 7 series and not changing to a different company...
member last time you experimented?
Also, I'd look into combo sets. I've played one before and am a real fan. Goal is to get back to that. Forgiving on the longer irons but pinpoint accuracy on shorter ones. Best of both worlds INO

Yes, I remember. Those Callaway Apex pros got me looking though

That's more than likely what I will do. The questions will be where to start the 5's 7 or 6.
Right now, my 565 7i is my favorite club.

My plan is 5,6,7 ZX5 and 8,9,PW ZX7.

Making me feel dumb. I play with musclebacks and don’t come close to a 6
Of course ball striking is my strength. Do you try and shape shots? Maybe do a mixed bag of short iron muscle backs and players long irons.

Start at the lowest loft you currently play to your 7i since it's your best. Then go 7's for the 8-pw.

I’m a 4hcp and I recently went through the same delimma
I ended up switching from mizuno MBs to callaway apex. I was in Cleveland and Mizuno MBs the last 20 years prior.
It’s still a transition, but I appreciate the easier iron and new tech. I miss the ball control.

Not really, I'm just going for straight. I used to have a nice draw. I really just need to practice like I used to.
I've never been a good ball striker. I can hit nukes, solid/long with fairway woods, short game and putting are on point. That second shot is what holds me back. 2022, I will conquer it.

When you hit nukes in Crowley it mostly short game after that!
I seent it

I was set up with 4 and 5 Mizuno MMC's and 6-P Mizuno MPs. I had less dispersion with the MMCs on the top end clubs. Nippon Tour 125 stiff shafts vs my old set of Mizuno MP 60s with steel Dynamic Gold stiff shafts.

There's no point in getting blades then if you're just looking for straight. Unless you get some for practice and want the feedback on ball striking they give you at the range. But that's probably completely unnecessary

Chappy ,
Players Distance- Apex 21 and PXG Gen4 P are great.
Players - the new Mizuno Pro's that will be available in February. Reviews have been great.
I can't be more happy with my PXG's Gen 4 P's with the MMT Shafts. Feel, forgiveness and turf interaction is top notch.

I’m off for 2 weeks starting next Wednesday. We need to crush white cans and play.

I tried a combo set of AP1&2s in college. Did it for the fall season. Really liked them off the tee box because it was like hitting a huge mashed potato but the ball speed of a stinger. Terrible for me off the turf and promptly went back to my mp67s and haven't looked back. Biggest performance differences I have found, as others would probably agree with, is in the shaft. Have you tinkered with different shaft options in your player irons?
