10 year old boy with chronic asthma/ allergy flare ups throughout the year. Very active child but when hit with upper respiratory viruses, it knocks him out.
Talked to his pediatrician about preventive options. We talked about putting him on a 5mg daily dosage.
As with the side effects of all drugs it’s got me concerned when it comes to the kids. “Severe mental health problems have happened with this drug or after it has been stopped.” Pediatrician acknowledged these but said she would give it to her kids.
Anyway, like with other life critical decisions I’ve come to the OT.
What say you parents who’ve had experience with Singulair and kids? Offering five star social score reviews with good advice.

Pics of wife and pediatrician.
Seriously, if it would greatly improve his quality of life, it's worth the risk, assuming the side effects are rare.

Heard it comes with nightmares. So we give it in the morning.
Have seen marginal improvement. She had covid this week and the cough came back.

My brother's grandson has been on it for years. He has fewer allergy/asthma flare ups. We have not seen any ill effects.

I took singulair as a child. That might explain a lot

Not a parent, but I have taken Singulair at different times in my life with no issues.

I’ve taken 10mg/day for 15 years with no issues.

Sounds like me growing up. I did allergy shots but was totally against taking daily medication. Vitamins and staying active. Rest and trip to Dr when sick.
Still get respiratory infections but it also keeps me active and eating healthy. Location makes a big difference. Hardly have any issues in Ak (unless around wildfires). Knoxville was the absolute worst place for me .

My daughter stayed sick as a younger child, having some type of bronchial event 4-5 times per year. Started Singulair when she was about 6 and hardly ever gets sick...got Covid back in September and barely a cough or breathing issue. Another go to when she actually gets sick is we give her Bromfed...it's a cough suppressant that has worked really well for her. Oh, and Allegra daily in the morning as well...she got her asthma/allergies from her dad apparently.

Our seven year old is on it and honestly, it’s the best thing we ever did. Any change in the weather sent her into a week of coughing, all day and all through the night. She has only had a cough twice since we started and we are about a year in.
Thankfully we have not seen any of the side effects listed, we had the same concerns. We give it at night with no issues (they recommend night because that’s when coughs typically flare up). Hope it helps if y’all decide to start it.

Can really help those kids with allergy triggered asthma flares. Have never personally seen that side effect you mentioned. I’m a pediatrician in Alabama. Like yours said, I would give it to my own child

Singular is one of the most dangerous Rx drugs out there.
DO NOT USE.
Can have severe mood altering side effects.

In May 2021, Rachel McHenry and her mother, Brenda Lee Danielson, sued Merck & Co. over the psychiatric effects of the popular asthma medication, Singulair. McHenry and Danielson sued in New Jersey state court alleging that McHenry’s use of Singulair as a teenager led to her neuropsychiatric disorders. The complaint alleges design defects, failure to warn, negligence, breaches of express and implied warranties.
The lawsuit alleges that the ongoing testing of the drug’s active ingredient, montelukast, indicates a link between its use and the psychiatric effects McHenry suffers from. The complaint states that “Many of these studies have demonstrated a correlation–and some show causation–between Singulair usage and development of neuropsychiatric events. Defendants have ignored these studies.”

Glad your child was able to take this. We tried it one time and it knocked our daughter out, scared the shite outta us. Anyone who tries this, start with a half dose and see what happens.

My oldest son is 29 ... he was 5 when they put him on it and it was VERY VERY new. He had ZERO side issues and when I tell you he was like a new kid, he was SERIOUSLY like a BRAND NEW KID.
EDIT: I'm now reading other comments. He had no issues with the meds at all ... can't remember how long he stayed on it ... maybe until he was 10 or so?? Now I ask WTF did I do to my kid??

My son took it for years. I was a little worried about that too, but never experienced any side effects of any kind. I suspect he took that for 8-10 years.

One of mine did have some troubles with nightmares so we switched to something else. Unfortunately there is always some side effect, one of the common ones is slowed growth. I am glad all of mine don't need those anymore, but I wonder whether one is/was affected in terms of growth.

We have a son in his twenties whose doctor prescribed it many years ago. I don't remember all the details, but we had to switch him to something else because his personality seemed to change while he was on Singulair.
Good luck on your search.
