Robert E Lee to Allen Toussant

In a meeting today, New Orleans is considering a change from street name Robert E Lee to Allen Toussant (sp?)
“Item #17 Renaming Robert E Lee Blvd
“Street Name Change 004/21: Consideration of the renaming of the entirety of Robert E. Lee Boulevard from Peoples Avenue to Lakeshore Drive/West End Boulevard as Allen Toussaint Boulevard Business Recommended for Deferral“
Now I’m not against Re naming streets as a practice. It’s been done for hundreds of years. Robert E Lee was certainly an accomplished human being despite the one blip on his resume.
Okay so maybe owning slaves is where we draw the line but aren’t there other people out there who have more significance than Allen Toussant? Sure he could play that piano and write good songs but Does he not have some flaws as a human? Certainly. We all do.
So maybe streets should just be named for inanimate objects or symbols. Like “circle street”. Where’s the harm in that name? Or “beignet boulevard”? Everyone loves beignets .
Full disclosure: Allen Toussant cut me off in traffic and shot me the bird. Had Dr dre music blaring out of the car. At least I think it was him.

Allen Toussant is a great person to name a street after

Completely unnecessary and asinine. Glad Thats the most pressing matter.

Allen Toussaint is at least from New Orleans
Robert E Lee fought a war that New Orleans pussed out of about three weeks in

I don’t have a problem naming a street after Allen Toussaint. In the 90s he’d stop by my neighborhood bar once in a while and drink a beer out on the patio. Most people didn’t know who he was. The Rolls Royce was the only clue that he was out of the ordinary.
-However- it shouldn’t require taking Lee’s name off of a street to name a street after Toussaint.

It's more important to remember that this will help reduce crime in New Orleans and make us all safer. Just like when they took Lee's statue down. Just look at how much better things got once we got that rolling.

It is pretty fitting. New Orleans was once a historically relevant city, a national and international economic powerhouse. It was more appropriate for streets to be named after major historical figures.
NO has since drastically declined and embraced the manufactured narrative of being a "cultural city," ie a tourist and hospitality destination. Renaming streets from major historic figures to local musicians is a perfect symbol of this spiraling fall from relevance.
No offense to Mr Toussaint or his family. He was a great musician and producer. But the name would mean nothing to most Americans and 50 years from now, almost no one except a tiny handful of cultural historians will know who he was.

That is true about New Orleans, but Lee had NOTHING to do with the surrender of the city on April 24th 1862. It wasn't until 3 years later almost to the day that Lee's surrender at Appomattox Courthouse had an impact on New Orleans history.

They should extend it to connect with Old Metairie and rename it Harry E. Lee Boulevard.

Not sure if it matters to you, but Toussaint lived on the 1400 block of Robert E Lee.
They are renaming the road he lived on for years.

Same could be said of Robert E Lee.

Holding up Lee or Davis as heroes is the dumbest thing white decedents of CW vets can do. Honor those foot soldiers who fought the ultimate "rich man's" war, but not the leaders who got them into a foolish and unwinnable war and got many of my ancestors needlessly killed, while suffering little hardship and living a life of ease post war.

And yet here we are arguing about him 160 years later, and no one in this thread does not know who he is. So no, not equivalent.
