Kia Telluride - over MSRP?

I've started looking in to getting a Kia Telluride and have been seeing them listed USED at $10k+ over brand new MSRP. Went to a Kia dealership and the salesman said they would charge an $8k premium over MSRP! The lack of inventory/chip shortage were given as the reasons, yet somehow they could potentially get a new order shipped in 45 days (from the Georgia factory).
I've read through Will Cover's thread about not accepting MSRP as a starting point, so this seems extra crazy to me. Anyone had any experience lately dealing with the shortage? I'm thinking I just go to every Kia dealership in 100 miles and pit them against each other until I can get someone down to MSRP. They'd still be making a profit, right?

Good luck.
Tellurides have been a hot item and above MSRP before the “chip shortage”. It’s been like this for a couple years.

Got mine $1,000 below msrp, $39k total, in March 2020 which was supposedly a great deal at the time because they were usually going for no less than msrp.
Dealership called the other day, asked my mileage (26,000) and said they would give me $44,000 trade on it if I wanted a different model on their lot. Its wild right now

Sorry, you aren’t getting a Will Cover style deal any time soon on a Telluride.
I picked one up last August for $40100. It was best deal I found by far, just got lucky.
We love the car though. Got the EX model with premium package. That combo just about gets you everything you get in the SX model except memory seat adjustment.

Was told on another site an area dealer offered MSRP on a 6-8 month wait, so that's good to hear.

Never pay over MSRP for anything.

Agreed. I like the orange day running lights on the SX too but not that much. It’s my wife’s car and she didn’t care so that’s (EX-p) the route we went.
The AWD has performed well in the snow and icy conditions when we took it for a ski trip.
I picked up a Thule luggage carry system and have been very pleased with it on this vehicle - in case you’re in the market.

Toss this out the window.
Most vehicles are going over msrp right now, especially the telluride.
You’ll probably do better on a palisade than telluride. I do think the telluride exterior aesthetics are much nicer than the palisade, but the Hyundai interior and tech is actually better than the Kia.
Also, if you can find a dealer that will do a custom order (on a Kia), you may get it at msrp.
I just picked up the sorento at msrp (baby telluride) and I love it.

I’ll add that if you’re a member of Costco, use the car buying program to see if you can get a decent deal. I recently did this and got about 2-3% below invoice when dealerships were trying to charge me over MSRP.

You have to order a telluride if you want MSRP. We have currently been waiting 4 months on ours.

You don't have much leverage currently when the supply is dry.

quote:agreed but the Costco program links you up with dealerships that they pre-negotiated prices with. Even in today’s market, it can save you money.

quote:interesting. I just put the info in and it just said verify with the dealer that inventory is there. Maybe it’s zip code specific.

In either case, the discount works for vehicles on the lot or if you order from the factory at the dealership. Worst case is your area isn’t participating but it only took you a couple minutes to find out.

OP, will cover method worked pre-covid, now nearly all cars (new/used) are selling above msrp/‘market’. Telluride especially. We bought our Telluride in June (ordered in April), paid MSRP (then negotiated free maintenance plan), but that is a deal when dealers all around wanted $5k-10k over sticker. AllStar Kia will take care of you

Has he updated that thread in the last six month? For vehicles that are popular like Telluride good luck getting MSRP right now. I’d wait a year.

My brother is a salesman at a Kia dealership. He is in the top 50 annually in new Kia sales. He makes 150k-200k a year selling Kia's. I was the I.T. guy for the auto group for 9 years.
Tellurides have gone for above MSRP since they came out. They usually are sold before they come off the truck. This was pre-covid BS. They had people get into a fight over one of them one time.
