Is it possible for someone to hack your account via your phone?

Went to Sam's and pulled up the app and it auto signs me in, so no typing of a password. I show the greeter the card on the phone to get in, get the items on my list using Scan & Go, and checkout.

By the time I get home, there were multiple payments made to my credit card, the one that is linked for payment to my credit card -- two from a computer and the other a mobile pay.

The payments were made using my linked checking account that only shows the last 4 of the account number.

Any ideas on how this can happen? I don't understand the motivation for doing it

Wow….I’d like to know how this happened too. I use that app all the time.

I think it's more likely that timing is coincidental and your credit card was exposed somewhere else.

Think of any business you've ever used that credit card at. That's the list of suspects for places where your credit card data was stolen. Companies have data breaches pretty frequently but you really only ever hear about the ones from the big box stores. And even those breaches have become background noise that doesn't get reported much. The companies that do the worst job of protecting your data are also probably so bad at data security that they may not even know they were breached.

If someone actually has hacked Sam's app they won't expose themselves and risk getting shut down by immediately using the credit cards they collected. They would probably sell the credit card numbers on the dark web. That way when they do get used it's harder to trace it back to the source, which protects their stolen card supply.

Could be a big reason why.

I never go on public Wi-Fi’s.

I think so too.

The most common ways credit cards are compromised are when you hand it to a waiter with a scanner in his pocket or when you use a gas pump with a skimmer on it.

So if you use the same password for your credit card that also shares the same password for a less secure mobile application, then the bad actor can attack the lesser secure vector then discover that you have the same password for your Sam's app as you do your finances. Biometrics can assist with this but if your phone has malware on it from a robo call or clicking a random text message link then(which I think happened to you) yes you can have an issue.

Don't open random links in texts, it's the new malware.

You might be right that it is coincidental. I had my phone connected to tmobile during the drive to Sam's. I didn't go to my phone to specify to use the Sam's club wifi.

My credit card wasn't used by the hacker to make purchases. With the Sam's app, your default payment method is on the phone and you swipe to authorize/initiate the payment

The hacker went into my credit card account and made multiple payments to the card. I am glad that neither account number is visible except for a few of the end digits.

The password and user name for the app and credit card are different. I wasn't logged into the credit card account when I was at Sam's. I only log into the cc account once a month.

I am just wondering why they would make those fake payments. Is it so they can send a message "hey bud, I got into your account"?

Someone hacked into my Sonic app and used it 6x in the past 48 hours in Houston before I noticed.

6 random transactions at different Houston Sonics, anywhere from $10-30

What’s funny is the sonic app let’s me see the recent orders so I can even see what the bastards ordered

I immediately deleted my card from the app and called my bank

They can scan that shite in your pocket.

But making payments on your card? That is a strange one. Your login was probably hacked.

Which could be from anywhere if you use the same username and password across diff accounts.

Preferably with an app like Google Authenticator. If not, make sure to put a pin or a verbal password on your mobile account.

The card info is NOT stored on your phone, it’s at Sam’s corporate. What you’re seeing is just a way for you to tell the cards apart. So you can tell corporate which one to charge the transaction to.

What is the source of the payments to your credit card account?

If I understand this; it looks like a mistake to me. Someone’s payment to their account was credited to your account.

I had a card hacked at Walmart by a cashier, but it was on her register and she somehow charged other items from different sources, luckily it was a brand new card (old expired) and it was the first time using it. I wonder if Sam's has an employee monitoring the transactions and used the link for other purchases while it had you in the system?
