Maybe Damone says frick it, is all in, and returns to lead the 2022 defense?

Clarks numbers are even more impressive when you consider all the dline and secondary that were hurt all year.

That makes them less impressive. It stands to reason that when all of those good players get hurt, the remaining good players will make more tackles. This is for two reasons. 1. On each play there are fewer good players to compete with for the tackle and 2. There are more plays because the defense can't get off the field, so more opportunities to make plays.

Still, a great performance that was expected by few Ranters besides this one, who was singing Damone's praises the season before.

They do not like great players on teams that are 6-6. Many of these awards are for people on the winning teams.

That would be amazing for LSU but unwise for Damone. He needs to cash out at this point and capitalize on his amazing individual season with the highest draft pick he can get.

If he did come back, I think he would be potentially the first at LSU to wear #18 for three straight seasons since the tradition of the number began. That would be cool. :)

Clark's numbers are mind blowing....but 6-6 makes it very difficult to win individual awards these days.

Is it an individual or team award?
Awards like this almost always take team performance into account. You can get a million tackles if your defense never gets off the field, and you're surrounded by guys not making plays.

UGA guy was the heart of a defense that had Georgia undefeated and ranked #1, and ended up in the playoffs.
Damone was the heart of a defense that kept a few losses respectable, on a 6-6 team.

I'm willing to accept Bama's Will Anderson winning the award over Clark based on the "heart of a playoff team" criteria. His numbers are much closer and he was always on the field and had to be accounted for.

But, apparently the Butkus people didn't think he was a linebacker, even though he was always referred to as one and made SEC first team at Linebacker.

The reality is that most of these awards are based on how well the school pumps up the kid for the award early in the year. At this, I suspect Clark and LSU were behind the curve.

Sent the stats that have been compiled on here and from the Web. Here is the response from the Butkis Foundation ...

"Thanks Michael. Damone was a finalist and received votes in our finalist ballot. He’s an excellent linebacker and has a bright future. Our selection panel of football talent doesn’t rely heavily on stat production because other factors influence stats among linebackers, such as competition, schemes, position, number of plays, etc. It’s the same selection process that earned Devin White the award a few years ago even though he wasn’t in the top 10 in tackles. Although there always is subjectivity, the committee has an excellent pattern of selecting linebackers. One that comes to mind is picking Luke Kuechly from Boston College despite the team having a losing record. Kuechly went on to earn more Butkus Award trophies than anyone else. Being one of the nation’s top linebackers is a huge honor for Damone."

I did not expect much and they did not deliver much in response.
AND they lied, D White DID have more tackles than the other candidates. Sent them the 2018 candidates. No response.

You’re right, but they should. I mean this is an individual award, not a team award.

He’s a senior and is playing in the Senior Bowl. He’s gone and I hope he has a great week and plays/practices himself into a high pick.

Damn it looks like Josh Allen and his 17 sacks should’ve won it that year.

3 pages in and only like 3 people with unbiased reasonable posts. It’s way easier to pile up stats on a bad defense than it is on a great defense. It’s common sense.

Dean was either the best or second best player on the best defense in the country. Having more tackles doesn’t automatically mean you were the best lb in the country.

Then some of y’all acting like Damone gonna get paid and drafted higher. He might get paid, hopefully he has great career. But, Dean is projected as like a top 20 pick while Damone I don’t even think is top 5 prospect at the position.
