While I do not think he actually meant assassination, how they play the game is you have to take it as they say it with no explanation.

100%. The Left doesn't allow nuance. Everything is literal if it can be leveraged. In this case, he said he should be eliminated. Clearly a call to violence to assassinate the man.
The difference is that A) Republicans don't have the balls to play this game with a straight face and demand accountability and B) even if they did they'd get no one in Legacy Media carrying water for them as they attempted the move.
