Before Elon Musk changed his Twitter bio to "Chief Twit," Twitter established a permanent work-from-anywhere arrangement for employees. But with half the employees fired, in a move to reduce costs due to advertising revenue declines, Musk sent an email to all remaining employees to report to the office immediately.

On Wednesday evening, Musk sent out the first email to employees about "difficult times ahead" and the end of remote working unless he approved it, according to Bloomberg. The new rules were enacted immediately, requiring employees to be in the office for at least 40 hours per week.

"The road ahead is arduous and will require intense work to succeed," Musk told his employees. In another email, he added, "over the next few days, the absolute top priority is finding and suspending any verified bots/trolls/spam."

For most, yeah - I’ve been doing it for almost 15 years now with no issues

I’m not sure I could ever go back into an office unless I was paid substantially more

This. I've been full time remote since 2018 and it would be tough to go back to an office.

I am 100% in support of Elon cleaning up twitter.

I laugh at anyone who says you have to be sitting in a cubicle to do tech work however. I’ve seen reductions in effectiveness from an output standpoint of up to 30% with onsite work due to commutes, interpersonal issues and people just talking too much.

plus, increased risk of employees getting in car crashes, increased expense of onsite work spaces... oh, and don't forget interoffice sex and sexual harrassment....

However, I am happy Elon is doing this at twitter. It will help him get rid of more crappy twitter employees.

Before all the old baggers go all, "See! You can't do work remotely!" this is all about driving people out the door and not about productivity.

I think you guys are missing the point. Has anyone actually worked in silicon valley companies? You have a few doers, type a personalities but the rest are mostly lazy and really take advantage of remote work

While these issues are real, recent studies are showing that productivity is notably lower in work-from-home employees. When the pandemic started, productivity in work-from-home was actually higher. Since then however, productivity has fallen and the estimate is generally 25-30% lower productivity for work-from-home people. It varies from company to company though and has alot to do with how well the company leadership has adapted to managing in this way and holding their teams accountable for results.

I think this is more about putting these goofy kids in their place and seeing who’s truly dedicated to the company

He’s not BANNING remote work. He’s forcing them to justify it

Yea “recent” ones - where EVERYONE worked from home and not just those who have careers tailor made for remote work

That kinda contaminates the sample

Nothing wrong with remote work but Twitter is so infiltrated he’s going to have to keep them in the office and under supervision to weed out the nuts

I don’t claim all work can be done remotely.

But most tech work can.

Set clear and measurable goals, check in regularly and meet together on key projects when appropriate.

Then hold people accountable for their output.

I was able to cut a bunch of dead weight and attract talent who would’ve never moved to HQ or gone 100% on premise otherwise.

I suspect that this will not be a permanent move, but one to more closely evaluate his work force, and determine the best (most effective and least costly) procedures to enact going forward....it's the intelligent thing to do.

Let’s say you moved your family 4 hours from HQ during covid under the pretense that it was now permanent remote work. You are still a good performer and occasionally go to HQ for meetings and what not. You are onboard with Elon’s goals.
This seems like a justification for staying remote and I’m sure Elon would consider. He’s cutting the dead weight and good employees will not be fired for refusing to uproot themselves again.
