Is Miami Vice (2006) an underrated gem or an overrated mess?

Been on a Michael Mann kick recently. Started rewatching Miami Vice tv series, and was thinking about his 2006 film adaptation. I remember the trailer being incredible and the movie just being meh at best. However recently I’ve been reading in various articles here and there that Miami Vice 06 is now considered one of the great films of the 2000s decade. Not sure if there is any merit or if it’s a new hip take to champion the movie. What do you guys think of Miami Vice (2006)?

ETA: have it on my Netflix queue just haven’t had the time to revisit it

I actually think it’s an underrated mess

Like it is pretty bad but I still kind of love it.

I liked it when it came out but I haven't seen it since then. I'd also never seen a single episode of the 80s TV show at the time.

You'd better hurry. October 1st is the last day to watch it.

I pretty much can't watch this.

In an alternate reality, the film 300 doesn't get made, and instead, Bruce Willis, George Clooney and Michael Mann collaborated on a film adaptation of Steven Pressfield's Gates of Fire.

In our reality, 300 got made and Mann made the Miami Vice film instead.

Terrible movie. It needs focus. The plot keeps changing and is hard to follow.

It’s a Michael Mann movie. It had incredible shots, good score and sound design, testosterone inducing shootouts.

My favorite Mann movie, and I know that is a controversial statement. I also think it’s been influential to a younger generation of filmmakers.

Love Heat. Prefer MV. Better cinematography. I think MV has more of the archetypal Mann shots. Closeup on actors using wide angle lenses.

Overrated mess. Colin Farrell has made a ton of shite movies. Without Brendan Gleeson, his resume is really piss poor.

It's worth watching just to see Colin Farrell's interpretation of Sonny Crocket as a pirate.

It’s a shame that they didn’t give Colin Ferrell a pet alligator

Underrated gem. I thought it was a great film from the beginning. It has a lot of stuff in it from the series but it also has a similar atmosphere to Collateral. For me, it worked. I think it got a bad rap because it wasn't what people were expecting from a Miami Vice movie.

I revisited this tonight, because I realized that it was going off of Netflix in a few days.

I agree with this. It was difficult to follow. The aesthetics, while pretty good, were not as good as I would have expected for Miami vice.

Overall, it was Ok, but there’s a reason why so many people are saying that they haven’t watched it since it came out in 2006.
