Both great Alexander Payne comedies. Many consider Sideways the better movie because it is arguably "deeper" and addresses some issues in a more serious way. But Election is consistent and smart comedy gold that is also very insightful about human behavior. Election wins.

This made me laugh. Not much in Sideways did.

However, there was a scene in Sideways with Virginia Madsen where she looked stunning and I remember it being a really well written scene. I just don't remember it, now.

Reese was reprising the Tracy Flick character for a Apple+ series that was planned for release this year, not sure if production finished before the strike though.

The Election Spinoff series is only in Treatment. AP has been in post on "the Holdovers" most of this year. Which, by the way is being hailed as his best film since Sideways in early reviews.

Maybe it will flare up after the labor dispute.

I was going off the top of my head and I'm sure it was mixing multiple stories/projects up - I know she was involved with another Legally Blonde movie etc.

As far as the hype around the Holdovers..
I liked the Descendants a lot (I mean it was nominated for Best Picture) - Nebraska wasn't bad either. (didn't think it was worthy of a Best Picture nom)

i've liked every AP film except for Downsizing. Which he didn't even like and was hampered by big stars and studio execs at that budget level. He settled into more of a comfort zone on the Holdovers and of course having Giamatti and 70's palette help. Surprisingly, The Holdovers is his first period piece.

Election is a modern classic.

Sideways is a joke that isn't funny.

I was in college when Sideways came out. My buddies and I had seen a commercial for it and basically all we noticed was the golf scene with Lowell waving his club like a madman.

So 4 of us guys go see it not knowing what its about. About 30 mins in we realized it wasn't our kind of movie but we stuck it out to the end. We all walked out of there questioning our manhood but all agreeing that we fricking loved that movie.

This scene is what makes Sideways better in every way:

Miles & Maya Pt 1
Miles & Maya Pt 2

Neither Broderick nor Witherspoon are likable in Election. I just remember feeling “icky” after watching that one.

The connection between Miles & Maya is so grounded and soulful. It’s easy to root for them.

I like The Descendants the best actually. I thought it was the best picture of the year that year.

We were a bunch of dumb 20 year olds. We were a little more "American Pie" than "Sideways" at that time

Now I'm in my 40's and have no problem watching movies like this

Sideways. It’s the most mature & honest “guy movie” ever made.

Election is good, as is descendants, but sideways is superior to both.

Adaptation is another good one.

Nebraska has grown on me. I like it more and more every time I watch.

It must be this scene (I linked the YouTube). Amazing acting and she does look stunning.

Who's likeable in Sideways?

The chicks suck. And the guys are losers who steal from family and they're funny only to themselves.

At least Election isn't just road trip masturbation.

I think the chicks are ok except for Miles’ ex-wife. While Miles did indeed “marry up,” of course she leaves the teacher driving a 20 year old Saab for a Hollywood handsome restaurant owner who drives an Escalade.

I thought Maya (Virginia Madsen) and Stephanie (Sandra Oh) acted pretty normally under the circumstances.

And if any movie character epitomized me, it would definitely be Miles. Except I never finished my book.

ETA: And I will drink frickING MERLOT!!!!
