Were the last two seasons of Game of Thrones actually bad television?

Just finished a rewatch of Game of Thrones. I can’t say it was deserving of how bad the last two seasons were bashed. Other than Euron being a c*unt and the Ironborn being boring, I actually rather enjoyed the last two seasons.

I’d say after season 5 was bad. They ran out of source material and then you saw the same writers that gave us X-men origins Wolverine put pen to paper and gave us vomit on the set… again.
For example, in season 6 watch the battle of the Basterds.
That whole battle on screen was pitiful. You had people swinging at nothing, you had Jon Snow with all his plot armor and Sansa purposefully withholding she had reached out to the Vail was terrible writing.

I think my curiosity is just wondering what people wanted to see. Did people want Dany to be a good queen? I actually enjoyed her crazy coming out.

Her turn was bad, but no way she and Jon make it to the finale still breathing because she sees him as a threat to her throne
Sansa runs away. Gets married to Ramsey Bolton.
News flash. In a feudal era if you run away you’re still married. If you go by what kingdoms use to do they would have a priest adjudicate the marriage.
Tyrion didn’t die and she is still his wife even at the conclusion of the show in season 8

People didn’t want the story to be rushed. D&D admitted they could have made the show last a little longer if they wanted but they didn’t. That was the problem. Rushing the show made the storylines make the less sense and many characters had to be dumbed down or limited in order to meet their shortened plan

Jon Snow should've been offered the crown. He would still have turned it down and headed up north.

How could he have been after killing Dany though? Regicide without punishment could not have been permitted.

How much longer would have been the right length? Sort of feels like no matter what, people would have taken an issue with an end point.

We spend all that time WAITING for the army of the dead to get to the wall and when they finally cross the battle us over quickly and all it took was a dagger to the leader?
One of the biggest letdowns in tv history.

I think most of the ending of GoT could have worked if they had spent more time setting it up instead of on a pointless "The Eunuch and the Slave Girl" love story and cock/eunuch jokes. So, in order to end it in their desired timeframe, they decided to have characters abandon what had been established about them over the previous seasons.
Tyrion went from one of the smarter players of the game to a buffoon who could only tell cock/eunuch jokes and make plans designed to lose the war.
They spent seasons setting up a Jaime redemption arc only for him to do a 180 and declare he never cared about the people or anything and goes back to hug Cersei's skirt.
Other problems with the last seasons were the bad writing, lame dialogue, putting characters in situations where only plot armor could save them, forgetting about the enemies giant fleet of laser-guided railgun scorpions that could fire 6-foot bolts hundreds of feet into the air against moving targets with pinpoint accuracy, Bran having the "best story" so he should be King, characters teleporting across the world, etc.
All of that adds up to ruining what would have been one the best shows of all time, where every episode was talked about and over analyzed until the next episode or season. Instead, it got people to pretty much lose any desire to rewatch or talk about it, and seemingly got HBO worried enough that it took them until after HotD aired to renew it for a second season.
Anyways, I'll finally stop my rant here as I spent way too much time and thought on this.

Last two seasons compared to most stuff on TV were pretty good.
Last two seasons compared to the previous seasons were bad.
I put 100% of the blame on GRRM for not finishing the book. Even he doesn’t know how to end the story.
Hell, in the last book published he is growing the World and adding new characters when he should be contracting in efforts to end the series.

I agree with all of this.
Say what we want about HBO and the writing for how this ended, we got an ending on the show. GRRM was so conflicted on how to wrap it up that he abandoned trying.

This post actually makes no sense. You can’t kill the dead anything more than temporarily. If the Night King has the ability to raise the dead at any point, the way that army of the dead was defeated was neither illogical or rushed.
Hell, we spent seasons watching Arya become a badass.
I don’t understand what people wanted to see for an ending to that battle. The Whites wrecked everything they touched, which is how it should have been. If a living army has beat them on a battlefield, that would have been silly. You got the entire fight scene for damn near an hour and an ending that was alluded to when Jon and his party went north of the wall to capture a White to show Cersei.

Everything has already been said about how GoT ended. Especially the last season.
Glad you liked it though.

Her going mad queen is one of the few later plot points that made sense.

Season 8? Yes as a whole. I enjoyed the long night though and I’m in a minority.
Season 7 I can rewatch without many complaints other than ridiculous faster than light travel.
