Parents of teenage boys regarding phones and disturbing pictures

First off, I came to the right place. Wife (no pics) and I had a daughter (no pics) in our early 20s. We’ve had 2 pretty late boys. In our early 50s, and have 12 and 16 year old boys, daughter is gone and married. She got a phone at 16 but we kinda compromised as times change and got middle child a phone at 14. I did use to check his phone (I don’t know the appropriateness of this) and never found anything.
I at least think I blocked social media but I’m skeptical he still has access. It’s an iPhone 7, only works on WiFi. Found hidden photos on photos app. I feel like an 80 y/o southern Baptist grandma. All just pics of older women faces, some bodies in scandalous clothing. But a few of him doing things while looking at those pictures.
I realize the hilarity of this to everyone but I have no idea what to do. If I found a dirty magazine I’d laugh. Many of these pics are 2 years old so it started at 14. If I take phone away till he’s 18 is he gonna be a weirdo and even worse then? Is it normal for kids to have hundreds of pics of women on their phone in a hidden box? Why would you take a picture masturbating to an instagram lady?
I’ve never felt so old until today. I regret looking at his phone, haven’t in so long. I still have one more, no phone yet, coming to that age. I didn’t grow up with all this. Hell I grab my wife’s phone to look at nsfw threads on here. I’ve had some bad demons in my past but porn has not been one of them.
I have usually known what to say until this and I have no idea how to approach him. I don’t even know how to google how to approach him. I’m almost at a point of getting rid of his phone but he’s going to be driving soon, and even then I doubt I’d care if he has a phone. But again, I remember the hardcore parents of the 80s and all their kids went crazy after HS.
He’s never been in trouble, plays football and baseball. He’s quiet though. Had a girlfriend for a few months but they moved out of state.
I’m laughing while typing this out at future replies but in reality, I’m overwhelmed. So parents of young teens, have yall been in this situation or do yall stay away from the phone? I have most restrictive setting set up already. Blocked instagram, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok. All these women look older than HS girls

I would talk to him about photographing himself or anyone else for that matter.
other than that, hes going to see it on his friends phones, or one of the millions of phones that the other kids carry.
We cannot shield them any longer from the onslaught. We can only teach and pray.

Pretend like it didn’t happen so he still feels the need to hide it.
Kids are gonna do this stuff one way or another. Dont take his phone.

Take him to a strip club and pay for the VIP room.
That’s what a good father would so.

At least you know he's not gay

The pictures of girls on his phone aren't alarming to me (don't have teenagers yet mine are still young).
The pictures of himself are concerning just for his own sake. Gotta be real careful who you send that to so it's better just not do it at all. Especially that young. Teenagers are mean it could easily get around.
Happened at my highschool a lot and that was a decade ago. Can't imagine what it's like now.

Yes. And not even for young adults.... he's a dude going through puberty. Leave him alone

teens with phones is not healthy and most don't understand the consequences
if caught they will likely be kicked out of school and can even result in charges by law enforcement

Pictures on his phone are normal. The pictures of himself on his phone are something to be concerned about.

Agree. It's no worse than us as teenagers having dirty magazines stashed in the closet or under our beds.
We all did it.

To answer your question about if it would mess him up if you suddenly took his phone away at 16 for 2 years after he has already had it since 14 and is about to start driving: yeah that’s a bad move especially since he sounds like he behaves for the most part. That would be a great way to make him actually start acting out.

Underage selfies have been prosecuted as child porn.
Wipe the phone.
Wipe the phone.

Explain to him the severity of taking sexually explicit pictures of himself as a minor and yes I agree that part is pretty weird but I think blocking social media for a HS student may have a hand in why he is doing these things. I think that's a bit overbearing as a parent.

Just be glad he’s not gay

Yeah you do.

In all honesty, I would just try to inform them early and often how dangerous that kind of stuff can be, and that once you put something out there it is officially out of your control forever. But the seemingly simplest of things can potentially ruin your life for a long time if bad things were to happen with it. It's a dangerous game that I don't look forward to playing once my boy is old enough for a phone.
When my goddaughter was in middle school some girl there texted her boobs to a boy in class, and he shared it with all of his friends. The girl got suspended (not sure anything happened to the boy). That was like 10+ years ago, so I imagine punishments are even harsher now (and child porn is on the table as someone else mentioned).
The pics of women would be much less of a concern to me than the videos of himself.

Yeah, I'm trying to figure out how to word all of it to him.
