The Wreck by Ivan Aivazovsky. You can almost hear the storm.

That generation was so much more badass than we are. Can you imagine the typical soyboi squad dealing with that shite?

Thinking about that has to be pretty terrifying. Imagine a ship sinking in the middle of the night. Unless it's a clear sky, you can't see your hand in front of your face. I realize they had lanterns, but trying to make repairs or get to a lifeboat must have been next to impossible.

Hangs in the national gallery. Hard to find online as he painted a similar one called Shipwreck so you can just imagine how that goes on google search.

The seas are so bad they are sinking this big ship!

I know! Let's all get in this really small row boat.

The meatball on top of the turret really sets up that shot.

The way he paints the water and the almost emerald shade he uses to highlight the swells. I dont know anything about the guy but there is no way to capture that without seeing it. That guy has experienced hard swells on the open sea.

Can you imagine the typical OTer?

“Nope. Not getting in. That boat doesn’t have an outboard motor. Damn liberals!”

To go along with the Dan Carlin thread he gets into some of the sea faring the Vikings did in his new episode and really paints a nice picture of just how shitty it would have been back then.

Going out in the North Atlantic, not knowing what was out there, in arctic temperatures on a big arse open boat huddled under oiled leather or seal skin. When you get too cold and need some warmth, you had to go below deck to huddle with the livestock.

Savage existence. Definitely made hard men. The courage, strength, etc. you would need to survive these conquests is insane.

Not so sure. I think it depicts a ship run aground near shore in a storm. Great 19th century painter. Variety of subjects, but his maritime subjects are the best.
