Healthcare in this country is a bunch of absolute crap for those who actually pay for it.

Happy Friday. I'm pissed off. I have primo insurance with a deductible. I understand that. Toddler was sick on a Sunday, had to go to ER. Pay my co-pay, expect to get bill. It's the terms of my insurance.
ER filled with non-payers. Wife works in same hospital system. They operate on homeless all the time. No way to pay. Hospital routinely eats $250K in costs.
I get a bill in. I owe $608.00. Rough but whatever. I call up the billing office.
I said, "Look, I understand you're trying to collect and this bill, and I understand you offer cash discounts for those unable to pay. All I've got is $490.00 left on this FSA bill. Can you take that and settle the account?" It's .80 on the dollar but they've already been paid a portion by insurance. I'm paying on time. Maybe they do me a solid. They give cash service discounts all the time.
This lady proceeds to tell me that they offer no discounts and that all bills must be paid in full. We are essentially inflexible.
Now, look, I understand I owe them this money, but I kind of got peeved because I know FOR A FACT that they routinely. Routinely EAT MILLIONS of DOLLARS in surgical costs. ROUTINELY see patients with no way to pay and no way to collect.
There is $140 BILLION in unrecoverable medical debt in the US right now. The ones who pay are the ones that are given no accommodation. I don't know why this aggravated me so much over $100.00, but probably because I know how these hospitals operate and how much debt is never recovered.

Simply call back in an hour, speak with a different person, and get a whole different result.

We don’t have healthcare in this country, we have sick care. Insurance, especially medical, is one of the largest scams known to man and are 100% in bed with the medical/pharma industries to screw the payer.

Next time do a better job dressing up as a homeless person when you go in.

Still better than having the govt in charge of your healthcare

I save so much money by not paying for health insurance. When any of my 6 kids get sick I just take them to the ER.

I’ve never had a hospital accounting/billing office not at least offer a payment plan. And typically at a discounted rate.
My guess is the person you talked to doesn’t know what they’re doing. Hospitals are generally happy to take your money because it’s cash in their hand.

Same. Just use fake names. Illegal to ask for ID

This is exactly what I am used to. It's essentially "free money" in which they recover...at a 15% rate.
15% is how much debt is expected to be recovered by any medical collections office. This particular office I know does not report to the credit bureaus. There's no incentive to pay other than "being a person of your word".
T have never encountered such nonsense.

It is crazy
Someone walks in off the street paying cash pays half of what your out of pocket is with expensive insurance

That Idiot Obama screwed it up for everyone, especially the working man/woman.
Pre Obama - Kid breaks finger you are out $250-$500
Post Obama - Kid breaks finger you are out $5,000
I have a large group BC/BS plan (company pays 2/3 I pay 1/3) and it's absolute shite, my 1/3 is about $500.00 a month.

They’re all trash. My wife and I had a baby this year and the amount of piecemeal bills they send is unbelievable. There’s absolutely no way to figure out what’s what and if the amount they’re asking you to pay is correct. Why are doctor visits/surgeries/procedures the only thing we “purchase” without knowing the price first?

Yep. My daughter got RSV at a few weeks old and had to bring her to the ER. She got admitted on a Friday — main staff gone so nobody was able to discuss financials with me or my insurance coverage. The only treatment she received was .25L of O2/hr. Not one doctor came in to see her, just nurses and assistants every 8 hours. Discharged on Sunday morning.
Received a $24,000 bill two weeks later

Just be an illegal immigrant and you'll never have to pay for anything.

I fell down our basement stairs and broke two ribs and dislocated my shoulder about two years ago. Ms. Cotten was out of town so I painfully drove myself to the ER. They treated me and sent me along my way...but they never happened to ask for my insurance so on the way out I gave them my card....
Well I was fully expecting a relatively large bill, but about two weeks later got a bill in the mail for a total of something like $190 for everything. I called them up and asked if that was run through insurance and the woman said no, they had me marked as no insurance. I asked hypothetically if I had United Healthcare, what would my bill look like? She said oh around $2200-$2300. Without shame I said "Well frick, good thing I lost my insurance a few weeks ago. Bye".
Paid the bill and never heard a thing about it since. Totally fricking criminal how hospitals and insurance are in cahoots and I feel zero shame for my decision.
