hail storm insurance claim advice?

You louisiana baws have any advice on how to deal with my homeowners insurance? First time homeowner. No idea what I'm doing and a slew of people are trying to get me to hire them.
What are the pro's and cons of hiring one GC company to manage it vs trying to manage it myself? Any central texas roofer recommendations? This guy is saying they can make all kinds of claims for cosmetic damage, is that true?
I already got screwed with my car - my dumb arse decided to be a hero and put my girlfriend's car in the garage, only to later remember that I had decided to be a tightwad and cancel my comprehensive coverage.
I'd like to avoid getting screwed with my house as well.

Chris Jackson/Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf can teach you everything you need to know about dealing with insurance companies.

Only if the policy doesn’t specifically exclude it. Read your policy.

Just find a good, reputable roofer. I've had 4 different hail claims and learned this lesson the hard way on the first one. A good roofing contractor will do all the negotiating & communicating with the insurance company's adjuster. And unless your deductible is really high, he can lighten (or negate altogether) your deductible.

You are only managing 1 policy for 1 house. It's not like you are trying to manage a homeowners policy for the HOA of 100 unit condo building.
Just read the Dec page as that's what governs the policy.
FYI, if you make a bunch of bullshite claims, they will either drop you or double your rates.

Hire someone you trust to handle it properly and allow them to do what they do.

Has an adjuster inspected your damage and prepared an appraisal? Once you receive the appraisal then hire a contractor and your contractor can discuss any issues and discrepancies with the adjuster and reach an agreed price.

I can arrange a blue tarp over the roof just in case there's any chance of leaking. $3,000.00. LMK.

Lots of threads about roof replacement on the Home/Garden board.
We recently went through this and paid around $15K out-of-pocket because our asphalt roof was over 15 years old so the deductible was around 50%.
There was a huge difference in bid between a roofer in our neighborhood and a better-established contractor an hour away.
Document everything very carefully with the insurance company and roofer.
We switched from asphalt to metal at higher cost, but future homeowner's premiums will be lower and we got an immediate refund to reflect the reduced cost of the current policy term.
The roofing company was essentially our GC, since they supplied the materials and roof panel machine but subcontracted the labor to a guy with multilingual skills.
Insurance companies are touchy about cosmetic claims, so get their adjuster out to evaluate as soon as you can.
Should you change to a metal roof you'll lose the ability to file cosmetic claims since hail dings won't impact the metal's life expectancy much.

I'd recommend dealing with a reputable local roofer and not the storm chasers though. If you have issues down the road, at least a good local roofing company will be around to come follow up if somethings not right. Good luck getting any kind of issue fixed with a company that only showed up after the storm and skipped town as soon as that work started slowing down.

Hire a private claim inspector or public adjustor. They will cost you 10% of the claim value but it's worth it. I made the mistake of letting my insurance come out and inspect without hiring my own representative and they initially valued my claim at 1/5 of the damages my inspector found after I questioned the insurances low offer.

And BTW do not let the contractor manage the claim for you. If they negotiate 20K for a roof replacement they will take the full 20K even if the cash price for the exact same work would only be 10K.

100%
While the nearby roofer didn't show up on his own, he got there 30 minutes after we called, gave us the friendly advice not to get other bids, and overpriced his bid by around 30%.

I’m not sure but that may not be 100% legal.

Otherwise known as insurance fraud. Definitely take this guy’s advice.

I just went through a hail claim on my roof. Call a reputable local company for a free inspection. They will tell you if they think the damamge will meet the insurance companies criteria for a claim. If they think it is contact your insurance and start a claim. They will send out an adjuster to inspect. He will tell you yay or nay. After that I recieved a check minus the deductable and depreciation about 10 days later. Then get a few estimates from reputable roofers in your area and choose one. This was my first homeowner claim and I was not aware the insurance check had to be mailed to the mortgage holder for endorsement prior to depositing into my account. After completion I signed an affadavit that work was complete and am now awaiting the remaining check for the depreciation. All I was out of was my deductable.
