ISTANBUL (AP) — Rescuers from across Europe rushed to a cave in Turkey on Thursday, launching an operation to save an American researcher who became trapped almost 1,000 meters (3,000 feet) below the cave’s entrance after suffering stomach bleeding.

Experienced caver Mark Dickey, 40, suddenly became ill during an expedition with a handful of others, including three other Americans, in the Morca cave in southern Turkey’s Taurus Mountains, the European Association of Cave Rescuers said.

While rescuers, including a Hungarian doctor, have reached and treated Dickey, it could be days and possibly weeks before they are able to get him out of the cave, which is too narrow in places for a stretcher to pass through.

Nope. Nope. Nope. Put this one in the pile with hopping in that sub that popped.

Hope they get him out, though. It sounds like he was doing work, at least and just suffered an illness at the absolute worst possible time and place.

I've seen videos of it and my palms start getting sweaty just thinking about it.

The only thing worse than squeezing through narrow cave passages slightly smaller than your torso is doing the exact same thing underwater. Cave divers are insane.

Imagine taking your gear off, in a cave underwater and sliding it through an 8” opening while keeping your regulator in your mouth and then spending the next few minutes wriggling and pushing your body through to the other side.

This is one of those things like the capsule that went to the titanic.

If you go down there and something happens, you just have to understand that you are on your own.

I think it’s ridiculous that manpower and time is spent to rescue people that go to that level of extreme stupidity.

I’m all for people having the ability to try that but that comes with an understanding that no one is coming to help you

This guy is a professional explorer and a technical cave rescue expert himself. It's an arguable point that maybe you should be on your own if you go into extreme situations but he wasn't doing it because he was a bored rich guy or for social media clout.

Subterranean Homesick Blues

Not a funny story but made me think of this Bob Dylan song title.

Would have never thought this was a thing. Didn’t know it happened so often.

It’s one of those caves you have to rappel down into like in Rambo 3.
