Is it possible to have a good happy life and do a desk/computer job for 40+ years?

Yes. It's not the desk or the job, it's the other parts of your life, current or past, that are making you less happy. You think you would be happier if you were a roofer?

If you work to live, make sure you take all of your PTO, and don’t have your life revolve around your job it absolutely is doable.

No one on their deathbed ever wished they spent more time at the office. Do your job, unplug and enjoy time with friends and family.

It helps me that we always try to have a vacation planned so that we have something to look forward to.

Depends on what you do outside of said job.

The job is merely the means to make the money to enjoy your life outside of work.

If you do things outside of work that make you happy, you will live a happy life, knowing you have to do the job in order for the cycle to be complete.

If you want to be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So for my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you

Sure. Why not? It beats being out in the heat/cold/elements all day everyday.

I've always enjoyed having jobs that were a mixture of office/fieldwork.

Variety adds a ton of work satisfaction. Every day in the same cubicle all day is awful, but so is every day in the elements all day. Getting a mix is perfect to keep you energized

Any job can be a happy job if you can find meaning in it. Finding meaning can be as simple as “I’m working this job so that I can provide for my family”. The environment, interactions, coworkers and managers do make a difference though on how bearable it is. You make your own happiness.

I believe if you don't like your job, it will bleed into other parts of your life.

Depends on a few things.
What type of desk?
what type of computer?
Where is this located?
Are you in India, in a room with 500 other Indians?
Are you prohibited from ever leaving your desk?
Do you get weekends off?
Do you have paid time off?
Do you have holidays?
Do you work 24 hours per day, or will there be several hours per day to do other things?

***************
Long story short, not all desk jobs are the same. Some suck and some allow for lots of time away from the desk. Some people hate being at the desk, some hate being away from it.

My desk job has me away a shiat ton doing stuff I love that some people would despise.

It’s just a question for thought.

I think we have to find ways to get out in the sun and moving.

I personally have taken to coaching youth sports as an outlet, and it’s helped.

Not if you aren't that good at it (assuming professional performance and achievement matter to your overall mental wellbeing.) Life in general can be fine, but that part of your life will suck.

Yes, absolutely. I've found that getting up and moving around once an hour or so is extremely helpful.

Yes, make sure to take care of yourself like someone else mentioned about using up all of your PTO. When my day is done, I close the laptop and try to get outside as much as possible.

Yes. A key thing to remember is that you don't live to work. You work to live.

Take every single second you have available of PTO. Take atleast 1 vacation a year. Id really say 2, but that's if you can afford it.
If you don't have enough PTO hours to do this, go to another job where you can get more hours.
Outside of vacation, take a day off work every now and then. Not for anything specific, but really just to relax your mind. Go to a spa, go play a round of golf, go work on that project in your house that you've been putting off for the past 6 months.

We've all heard someone brag that they've worked at their company for 35 years and they've never missed a single day of work in that span. That shouldn't be a goal to look to achieve. That should be something that frightens you.
