We're #1

Detroit, Michigan, is the most economically disadvantaged city in the United States, followed by Brownsville, Texas, and Cleveland, Ohio, according to a new report from Wallethub.

These cities are characterized by high poverty rates, high unemployment, food insecurity, low access to computers or the internet, and a large share of delinquent debtors, according to the report‘s findings.

Other cities in the top 10 include Gulfport, Mississippi; Fresno, California; Laredo, Texas; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; New Orleans, Louisiana; Los Angeles, California; and Shreveport, Louisiana.

Nearly 37 million Americans live in poverty, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The National Alliance to End Homelessness estimated more than half a million people had experienced living in homeless shelters or on the streets in 2021.

Some of the neediest cities are also among the most expensive places to live in the United States, such as Los Angeles and Fresno. The Wallethub report found that Fresno had the worst homelessness rate in the country.

Every city has its share of inequity issues. From homelessness and poverty to food insecurity and inadequate sanitation, inequity manifests itself in a variety of ways. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated many of these issues, too. But some cities have bigger issues with economic disadvantage than others.

Financial news and information site WalletHub compared 182 U.S. cities using 28 metrics related to health, safety and economic well-being to determine which cities have the neediest populations in 2021. Data used for the metrics came from a variety of federal, local government, nonprofit and private sector sources.

Baton Rouge is not on the list because they and their cronies take a larger proportion of tax dollars NOLA and Shreveport generate

most people make terrible choices in life choosing to live for immediate gratification instead of delayed.

i do not feel sorry for 95% of the poor people in this country or even lower middle class. If you continue to make terrible choices from childhood through early adulthood, dont expect to live a life of luxury.

sorry if that offends some.

All the buzzwords of victimhood...

quote:

economically disadvantaged
quote:

food insecurity
quote:

low access to computers or the interne
quote:

delinquent debtor
quote:

neediest cities
quote:

inequity issues
quote:

economic disadvantage

Poor people need help, but this type of approach, ignoring self determination and promoting victimhood, is designed to feed the government oversight of programs rather than to help people achieve.

Some are where they are because they suck as humans and have no desire to better themselves. These types detract from others who need some help to recover their situation and are willing to do so.

Buzzwords like those above simply hide the hard truths of an environment behind warm face of a group desiring to force redistribution in the name of 'latest buzzword.'

i think this is mostly true but we're not far away from a significant % of the population simply not having the cognitive abilities required to contribute to hold a real job/contribute to society

Poverty.

Poverty = crime. I am not sure you are saying its because of one race. There is one race that has a lot of people living in urban areas and those areas provide more opportunity to commit crime that impacts people outside of their economical status.

A lot of whites who live in poverty live in rural areas and there is a lot that goes on that either no police are called out to or doesn't make the news because its much easier for reporters to stay within the city because there is enough crime to report on there.

If you take all the poor whites in rural areas and swap places with the poor blacks in urban areas, the same shite would be going on. In urban areas people are much closer and have better access to nicer shite to break into.

Shreveport many years ago had incredible promise until utterly clueless morons got in charge. Maybe one of the worst city councils in any city anywhere.

Maybe one of the most business unfriendly cities in the country. People are leaving. What does that tell you?

The expectation of what people want and expect from government has changed dramatically since I’ve been alive. The reliance on government continues to grow. Self reliance is twisted concept. Some even consider it racist to suggest that a person be self reliant.

Politicians have taken note. They get scared.
It’s hard to get elected if your message is “sorry, you’ll have to be self reliant”

Democrats and republicans both know this. Democrats are just blatant about it and actually run on the promise to give more government cheese to needy constituents. Therefore, democrats need a growing number of needy constituents. Their path is a path to ultimate destruction of the capitalist democratic system that has made America Great for generations. The end result is a huge majority of needy with a growing poverty number.

Republicans just message it differently. They’d like for citizens to be self sufficient. They have to be careful though. What politician runs on the notion that they’ll do nothing? Maybe ron Paul.
Republicans have basically tailored their message toward fighting democrats. It’s not really a platform.

We need to get back to what Kennedy and Reagan believed. The government Is not there to get in the way or give handouts. It’s there to serve the people by protecting them from enemies either through military or from financial ruin by helping out when natural disaster strikes. It’s there to provide safe travel on highways, trains, bridges and tunnels (although a lot of that can be done through private funding)

Look at what is happening now in DC- republicans can’t elect a speaker. The Republican majority is wishy washy conservative and the true conservative mindset is limited to A small faction of hard core conservatives who believe in self reliance. So we have this head hanging and look ridiculous trying to elect a speaker.
that will play to the democrats favor ultimately.

Reminds me of a guy from India when someone asked him why he wanted to move to the US. He said "I want to live in a country where the poor people are fat."
